So while on a trip to Colorado I rode some great back roads that included gravel, dirt and really fine grit. That last one decided to get past the dust cover and open up my seal on the right side which covered my brakes with oil. I will give the trip story later in more detail. Right now I'm rebuilding my forks and noticed part #17 on the exploded view in my Service Manual. I have no memory of part #17 coming out of my forks nor do I see anything that looks like it. Did somebody forget to put it in or is the books exploded view inaccurate? It's called a "Spring Joint". It looks like it is a buffer between the spring and the bottom of the fork to keep the steel from wearing on the aluminum. There is one built into the upper "Collar" so it would make sense to have something on the bottom. This is an 06 fork and book.

If memory serves that acts like a thrust bearing between #2 and #27? I believe my forks have it, but it's been a while since I was in there.

I just had mine apart a couple of weeks ago and I can't remember if there was a part there or not. It might be a white plastic washer that goes between #27 and #26. I vaguely recall there being such a part.

If both of your forks are just alike, I wouldn't worry about it.

Well I just noticed that there is a large, thick black rubber washer that goes on #3 that is not shown on the exploded view. This leads me to believe that the exploded view is not very accurate! Thanks for the input guys. Anybody else that can chime in please do. Maybe that thick washer is #17 and I put it in the wrong place last time it was apart! I don't really think so as it's ID and OD fit perfectly over #3 and into #18.

I sent you a p.m. I have a few pictures of my 06 when I replaced the bushings and seals

Do I have a missing part inside my front forks?

No. If it was missing, it wouldn't be there.

Yes, I remember it, because it's not shown in the service manual but it's marked as #17 in the parts catalog

The drawing in the service manual has a couple of errors - one of them is the spring joint drawn between the spring and the outer tube (item 10) when it fits between the spring and the spring collar. The parts manual shows it in the correct position (item 17).
It is the white piece fitted to the end of the spring collar in the picture below.

Luftkoph sent me some photo's and I came to the same conclusion as Rays. The exploded view also doesn't include the large rubber washer that fits in the top of the outer tube and the three prong plastic washer that sets your preload. Thanks for your help. I'm going correct my drawing for the next time, I'll probably forget by then!!
