Does anyone have suggestions for some good roads to get from SLC to Grand Junction, CO? I'll be in SLC for Labor Day weekend and intend to a take a three day ride through Colorado ending up back in SLC. The direct route to Grand Junction is pretty nice except for some straight freeway droning during the last 1/2 of the trip that I would like to eliminate if possible.

Out of SLC go east on 80 to Park City, then from PC to Kamas. South from Kamus to Francis, turn left at the stop sign, UT 35 over Wolf Creek Pass to Duchesne. East from there through Dinosaur, then south on 64. That's how I'd go.

Strike the first part, I haven't lived there for three years and I forgot something. Rather than I80, take Guardsman's pass over from SCL to PC. It's a great ride and I've done it a hundred times on my Uly. About a mile of dirt at the top, but easy, moms do it in their minivans all the time.

Thanks, Ski. Sounds perfect.

What's with the car pool lanes? I have used them plenty of times in the valley.

Ok a couple of more observations. You may note that I steered you away from Moab, with its Arches National Park. This was intentional. Not because of the park or Moab though. If you look at a map, you could drop south out of Duchesne onto 6 and end up in Moab, but 6 is a horrible and deadly road. It's a two lane and it'll be full of campers and minivans. People die on this road all the time.

I don't know if you're a regular denizen of ADVRider, but if you go over there to the regional forums, there's a Rocky Mountain forum, and in that forum there's a massive thread called "Utards, Who's Riding What?" If you were looking for some like minded riders you could drop a post in there and get all kinds of advice, and probably have some company for part of the ride. Enjoy.

Thanks again, Ski. I have been to Moab many times, and I wasn't intending to make it part of my trip. But I appreciate the advice on Highway 6. Looking on the map, I may have been tempted to take it. Your proposed route through Dinosaur sounds good.

My intent is to to get to the GJ area, ride over Grand Mesa and bop around through western Colorado for a couple of days between Gunnison, Durango and Pagosa Springs.

He needs to fight that. It says right on the Utah government website that motorcycles can use HOV/Express lanes.

http://www.udot.utah.gov/expresslanes/

Edit: I just read where he was in the truck. Still, it was clearly a mistake and a lame ticket.
