Just finished a 700 mile ride home with the 06 Uly sputtering parts of the way home. Similar feeling when the ECM is resetting itself. Warmer temps seemed to make it sputter more while running OK in cooler. That is until I got closer to home when it was doing it all the time. Anyone have a problem like this? Will be taking it in soon to the dealer.

Check the ecm for cracks around the connectors, also check the spark plug wires for rubbing against the frame

+1 on the ecm. We've replaced then relocated both of ours. Both cracked when the weather was hot, but in FL that could be anytime.

If yours has a crack, it may be a good excuse to get a replacement ecm from EBR. I put a couple hundred miles on the xt this weekend and the performance difference between stock and the ebr ecm still amazes me.

I was stranded in MT for three days last summer and it sounds like the same issue. Turned out to be the ECM. Why when it's hot? When it gets hot, the plastic that the seat's made out flexes more allowing pressure on the ECM.

The way they are designed it is no wonder they have problems. Why use "military grade" wire connectors on some parts of the bike and then build a ECM, the core control of the engine, to a standard I would not consider good enough for a kids toy.

Not good enough.

Hot day = plastic seat pan softer
Soft seat pan = butt mashes the ECU

Examine the underside of the seat for rubbing marks. I saw marks on mine and chewed away the offending bits with a dremel.

If the rubbing is not obvious, you can do an unscientific test on the ecm for any rubbing using play-doh. We never actually did it because the rubbing on ours was very obvious, like on Natexlh1000's, but IIRC, you can do something like putting a a glob of play doh in a zip loc type bag where the suspected rubbing occurs, put the seat back on, and voila!

Mine ran much better when I lifted my butt off the seat, unfortunately I was still a long ways from home and didn't know about repositioning the ecm by the battery.

I had the exact same problem - ran fine when cold, sputtered when hot. The sputtering got to be worse and worse over time until it was backfiring through the intake and exhaust, shutting off, etc.

It was the ECM.

Ditto... and sitting on the seat made it worse. Thinking back, it was hot when mine went, too. I zip tied it all tight and then rode it another few hundred miles that way. Got HD to warranty it even though I was out of warranty because it's a known fault. There is a service memo on that, I think.

Thanks guys. Not too long ago my bike would shut off for a second with the engine light and then come back on. It did this every couple of hundred miles. I saw the bottom of the seat wearing on the block that sticks above the ECM so I put some sheet metal on both places where it rubs. I had gone over 2,000 miles with no cut out until this
problem so maybe it is catching up with me.
