I have my xb12xt around 2 months, I have come across a Ully being parted out over here in Ireland which is very rare! What spares will I need for my xt and what might I need? Im thinking if I can buy parts cheap enough it might be worth while. | ||

Take all the money you would spend on parts and buy gas with it. My XT was extremely reliable and trouble free. I had a problem with the clutch hub bearing, but that was caused by water getting into the primary case via the clutch cable. Other than that, I'd keep an eye on the wheel bearings (which you don't want to buy used), and ride the piss out of it. Of course, I only had 31,000 miles on mine when I sold it, so maybe I'm speaking out of turn. My Ulys ('06 X and '08 XT) were among the most dependable bikes I've owned in 40+ years of riding. | ||

Only spares I would keep are things that commonly break in a tipover like levers and pegs, then just the drive belt to keep on hand for good luck. Voltage regulators, Fans, IACs don't fail enough to make them worth keeping around, if you are going to do that you might as well get an extra bike. | ||

Add cam position sensor to the list, they can die unexpectedly and could be replaced on the road (if you had ECM spy and a way to remove two rivets, or if you had already replaced said rivets with screws). A bit pricey to just buy "for when you need it", but if you can get a good used one cheap I'd snap it up. I got a stack of stuff I expect I will need someday anyway (rear wheel bearings and spacer, belt, torca clamps) and carry it on long trips if I have the room. I keep it all in a bag I can throw in or out of a side case in a second or two. Haven't needed any of it yet. | ||

Turns out the guy dosen't have as many parts as I thought, he has sold most of it already! I have a new set of front and rear wheel bearings (skf) I'm planning on fitting them next time I replace the tyres. I suppose a belt is the most common thing to have a spare of so I'll get my hands on one. | ||

Take all the money you would spend on parts and buy gas with it. Funny. I have to take all the money I would buy gas with and spend it on parts. Honestly, I have only spent $400 on replacement parts so far which isn't bad, but it is a lot of gas. (The highest cost has been my time and lost riding time.) Seems like something is always wrong with mine, but I still have to agree with Crusty on passing on the parts. Unless I were going on a quest or something, I wouldn't bother stocking spares. You never know what you may or may not need, and you may end up spending money on parts you'll never use, or worse, could have spent on parts you actually will need. I would get the belt as someone else suggested because you know for sure that will need to be replaced at some point. Worry about the rest when the time comes to worry about it. | ||

Belt is a good thing to have around on long trips. I take my old belt along just n case. Plus a old used belt will be easier to put on along side the road. | ||

Front isolator (motor mount) wouldn't be a bad thing to have on hand. | ||

Weecorey. The problem with parts in UK is much the same with any bike/car these days. That is they hold little or no stock because it cots them MONEY. They order them in from some place like Holland and will take a day or two. Buy a belt and make sure it is the last version. Join UKBEG and buy it from Black Bear Buell as they, or used to, offer a 10% discount on parts. Ask for George. They are the best in the UK and know the bikes better than anyone. Have road recovery as well. |
