Any gear rolling down the road. When you just give it slight throttle trying to cruise the thing bucks and jumps until you get the rpms up. Is this part of the tps reset issue that I read about.

Again sorry about not using the search function more, on vacation I had to leave my room and go to the lobby of the motel and use they wifi. Hard to leave my wife with the 1.5 year old for very long.

Thanks for understanding. kris

Kris. A bikes just a bike and your problems WILL be fixed so have no worry on that issue. Clearly you have a lot of respect for others. Something a great deal more people need in this World today.

Could be, but a TPS reset problem isn't likely to come on suddenly.

What kind of riding were you doing when the problem developed? I'd first check simple things like making sure the battery connections are both tight, no frayed wires, both plug wires firmly seated at both ends, etc.

I had a similar issue develop once when riding in the mountains when I came down a LONG grade (~15 miles). When the bike got to level ground it would hardly run. Apparently what happened was the ECM "learned" a wacky fuel curve based on the engine turning ~3000 RPM for 20 minutes with the throttle almost closed. I rode straight and level at steady ~3000 RPM for a few minutes, and it cleared right up. Your bike could have a similar issue.

Good luck.

As far as the problem coming on suddenly, I have only owned the bike a little over a week and it has done it ever since I have owned it. I'm gonna drive it to work this week and see how things go.

Say I'm in second gear, holding the rpms steady around 2500 rpms. Its like a bike that is carbed and is cold. No way it should do this on a fuel injected motorcycle. I can drive around the problem by giving more throttle or by up shifting. Not a huge problem just thought Id ask incase some of you vet's have run into anything like this.

BTW, nice words ulyman.

Hey, I have had the exact same problem as you for quite awhile. I agree it is a little aggravating (it scares my women when it gags and bucks a little with her on the back). I wouldn't blame it on the bike, it's not normal.

I have tried several things so far, such as several TPS resets, adjusted throttle cables, "hard" TPS reset, cleaned the throttle body, injector cleaner in the gas, probably some other things I forget right now. As you can guess I am not a very good trouble shooter.

Same as you I can get around it by slipping the clutch a little extra to get past that spot. Symptoms on mine diminish a little when it warms up.

Anyway, my last guess is my TPS has a bad spot in that area. I ordered a new one 3rd of July from American Sport Bike. I plan on installing it immediately when I get it. I will post here to let you know whether or not it solved the problem for me. I hope I am right, that TPS was not cheap.

1. You can test a TPS, if you have a multimeter with a needle sweep display instead of digital. Simply hook the meter to the power and signal leads, and rotate the sensor. The needle should sweep cleanly, with no drops or jumps.

But remember - this is THROTTLE position, not RPM or speed. If the same throttle position (i.e. barely cracked, or whatever), at a different RPM, runs fine...the sensor is most likely fine. If the bike acts up ANY time you hold the throttle at..say...10% (if that's your "trouble zone"), regardless of RPM or speed? Then, look at the sensor.

2. Get the bike HOT before attempting any TPS reset. Then don't just let the throttle snap shut during the reset...give it a nudge closed to make sure. DAMHIK. Set idle for 1050 (again, the bike is hot now...remember?), and you should be good to go.

It is possible that you have a partially fouled plug, loose plug wire, or the infamous front plug wire worn through to the idle cable.

Etennuly, I have not heard of this. Going down stairs to see if I can check without to much work tonight.

Looks like I might have to buy the ecm spy/computer.

I should have just bought a 2008 or newer with the money I'm going to spend. ; )

ECMspy is a freeware program. You just have to buy or make the cable to hook your laptop to your bike.

I don't know the extent of the issue you are having, but I have NEVER ridden a 1203 Buell that was happy at 2500 rpms. Drop down a gear and ride on, it can take it!

The front plug wire laid across the idle adjusting cable. It would wear it through from vibration. Usually it would cause a weak spark for some time before killing the front plug.

ANY weakness in spark will really show if you are consistently trying to ride your Uly in HD mode. Loping along at 2500 in every gear is running this engine too slow. You are below the power band(as if) and at the base where torque and power come on. It is probably loading up. Like it has been said, drop a gear and let it breathe!

If you spend a half hour running it above 4200 to 4600, like cranking on it through mountain sweepers, you will be amazed how the ECM will adjust and really let the engine come alive.

We found a long time ago that cruising above 3500 RPMs is a good thing. Lots of guys keep them around 4000.

Ok, well thats exactly what I was doing. Just came from a cruiser so I guess that I try and drive the uly the same way. Always lugging the motor as I cruise. Supposed to rain the next ten days here. We need the rain but come on!

PS, where will it show if I have a private message. I log in at the top of the page but cant find anywhere to check my messages.

1) If you are going to keep a 06 bike ECM-SPY is very much worth having.

2) A 06 bike can/will run and idle very well. I know because I had one. If it does not then it has a problem. It will always run very hot, fan on a lot, bike gets hot and you will need to watch the small turning circle or it will catch you out. It also may not start well even if you use it all the time.

3) Opening out the air box, good gas and the breather mod is needed to make it run smoother.

All I can say is it can run right.

uly man,

1. Guess I need to start finding a source for the cable. Read that you have to make them. Will start my research.

2.The bike idles great, check engine light hasnt came back on for over a week now. Still has that very obvious stutter while low rpms cruising.
What is the small turning circle? Is that a waring lamp for over heating? It hardly ever starts right up. Hit the start button, it bumps then pauses then starts.

3. I took the breather cover off today looking for a air filter and found the air box. Found 2 inch circles on the opposite side of where the air would be drawn in from the factory. They were cut with a hole saw by someone. Assume thats what you are talking about there.

Breather mod next change.

Thanks for taking the time for a thought out response

Kris

Here's where to buy the cable:
http://xoptiinside.com/buell_cabletuning_store

I installed the new TPS and did a TPS reset on my bike this evening. I went for a 1 hour ride and the bike is 100% better ... that solved the problem for me.
I never checked my old TPS (don't have a analog resistance meter). Next time I go to Harbor Frieght I will pick up one of those free-with-coupon analog meters to see how bad the old one was.

Good news John, and thanks for the update. I have read that the breather mod and ported air box will help some with my surging. Found alot about it on buellxb.

Going to do both mods when I get home today. If that doesnt fix it then its time for ecm spy and the cable and maybe a tps.

I took a small gamble not checking the TPS first, but I had narrowed it down pretty well to it being that so I was fairly confident.

That tps was $93 plus S&H ... in your situation it's probably a good idea to check it first.

Did the breather mod today when I got and home and wow! Its like riding another bike. That got rid of 95% of the problem. If I wasnt looking for it I dont know that I would notice it. The only test run I did was without the air filter(didnt realize it was in until I returned and saw it on the work bench) but I think I might have gotten it.

Sounds good. I did it on my 06 bike and it made it much better. I have also done it on my 2010 bike and it still made a noted change but not as much. I think its a must on these bikes.

Since you have just got the bike I would suggest a service. Oils and filters at the very least.

I believe those are 1125CR mirrors.

At least, that's what's on my CR. And Uly. And S1W. Make sure to get an LED flasher relay when you change to these, or you'll have "fast-flash" signals.

"Make sure to get an LED flasher relay". Yes this is the easy way to do it but do not buy a cheap one either.

I can mail you the drivers you need for ECM-SPY for a 06 bike if you can not find them. This is ok because the 06 ones were free ware. With the later bikes they ask for a charity donation. Which is fair enough I think.

Uly man, That would be cool of you! I plan on getting the mirrors as soon as I figure out what I'm going to use to fill the hole where the old blinkers where.

My email is krismangrum@att.net

Going to order the cable for ecmspy this week. Thanks man.

These are the mirrors that I found on ebay. Seem nice.

I use the same type but with the straight arms and mine have flat glass which I prefer. I have had the Aprilia type and like these MUCH better. They are MUCH cheaper, better vision and a LOT easier to adjust on the move. You will still get some "blurring" but mine are as "clear as a bell" from 4k rpm on. I love them.
