I've read so many success stories on the EBR ECM that I thought I'd go over to the website and sniff around. Three hundred doesn't seem like a bad deal, I might get one of those. But while sniffing around I saw the software and cable for programming the ECM. Cost? FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS! Now I know they need every penny they can lay their hands on but come ON!

That's the $300 ECM, PLUS the proprietary software required to unlock and reprogram it, plus the cable to plug it in.

If you're racing...it's money well-spent, and it's CHEAP compared to some systems out there.

If you're a street rider, it's overkill. Get the correct preprogrammed box for your bike's setup, you'll love it.

What Rat said:

Aftermarket ECM for cars and truck run into the several K range.

HP costs money.

I believe EBR's price does not include an ECM, just a cable and a cd.

You are paying to use EBRs own software. In all cases this cost mega money. It has little or no benefit on a road bike.

There is now a $500 CD-and-cable-only option on the website, sorry. I didn't know that. That will (according to the website) only work on an EBR Race ECM (you can't "unlock" and reprogram your stock ECM).

If you want the ECM along with the cable and software, it's $625.

Still a bargain for a track bike. Ask any racer.

I saw a performance increase on the RACE ECM for XB12X w/Jardine exhaust. I'd do it again.

from what I have herd the ecm package also gives you factory level diagnostics. How much is a H-D scan tool worth? For a bike with less and less factory support in the coming years this is more important to me than any performance gains.

Specialty proprietary software is expensive, plain and simple.

The programmable ECM is overkill for 99% of us, but the few of us that are drag racing, have different cams, turbos, etc, will benefit from the EBR software.

$500 isn't really a bad price, take a look at some other professional programs. Adobe Photoshop, Autodesk Autocad, ArcGIS, Microsoft Office, etc. Those are programs designed for the mass market, so they can benefit from the economies of scale to pay for the R&D and distribution. Even those aren't specialty programs made for a handful of ECMs. Given what it probably cost to have the program made, I doubt EBR has sold enough copies to make any money off it.

"I doubt EBR has sold enough copies to make any money off it." Or me? You are lucky to EVEN get EBR or ECM-SPY these days. Try it with anyone else and see if you can.

The EBR Pre-programmed ECM is well worth the money. It felt like the grips were gonna get pulled from my hands first time out. The power is awesome for 103hp in my opinion.
