Ok guys, I need yall to tell me that I'm worrying over nothing. Had my uly for a litle over a week now. Love the thing. When I found this forum I read all the threads in the new uly section. Honestly it scared me a little puting that much money on the line for a first gen uly but I bought the bike anyway. I have found the computer rubbing issue, and three bare wires. Now for my question...

At 2500 rpms the engine starts a ting ting ting sound that gets louder up to around 3000rpms then it trails off. It doesnt sound like fuel ping to me. I read that the 2007 models have engine issues but havent seen any 06s with this problem yet. The bike runs great and is very strong.

Am I over reacting? The bike only has 12k miles on it. I want a bike that I can enjoy for a long time that I can trust.

Thanks in advance.

I don't think it's anything serious. Crank issues will definitely NOT sound like "ting-ting-ting". Spark/fuel ping should occur only under acceleration and to me sounds like somebody hitting a piece of steel with a ball peen hammer.

One easy thing to check is the horn. On many of these bikes, the horn bracket allows the horn to vibrate enough to hit the back of the flyscreen; it happens in the exact RPM range you describe. Remove the flyscreen and look for a mark on the back. You can sometimes just bend the horn bracket enough to keep the horn from hitting.

Check your muffler band clamps too (1 toward front, 2 at rear). If front clamp was reused after a muffler removal it can break. You don't want to ride it with that band clamp broken.

You are running the highest octane you can get.....in this hot weather they all ping even with high octane. You can adjust the timing on 06 & 07's try STP octane booster. I have used Toulene added to the tank with some success. Try not to let the gas get real low in hot weather as the hotter the gas (and it can get screaming hot if the tank is low)the more likely it is to ping.
here is the timing adjustment thread , this helped my 07

Hmmm, ok. I'm a diesel mech but I know that doesnt qualify me for anything. To me I'm 90% sure its coming from the engine. Although I will check the horn and the muffler as soon as I get home from vacation.

One bit of info that may be relevant now that engine ping may be to blame is that I've ben riding it in the mountains the last 3 days. I live at a much lower elevation in middle tn. Only got to ride it for two days back home before trailering it up here. I hope that the timing adjustment fixes the problem. I will check it out as soon as I get home this weekend. Thank you guys, sorry to be such a newb.

I seem to recall that the ECM needed to readjust after running for some time at different altitudes. I believe the bike needs to be run for like 5 minutes and maintain a constant RPM above xxxx. I don't remember the exact procedure and maybe someone can chime in or you can do some searching.

My 06 always pinged and the engines are fairly noisy. I remember I left my ear plugs out one day and freaked out at all the engine noise I was hearing. My 08 doesn't ping at all. If it gets too excessive you may want to invest in an EBR ECM. If its running strong you are probably ok.

These engines can be quite noisy. Oil makes a difference. I have heard these engines sound like a bag of marbles tumbling in a dryer. IMHE switching to heavier oils, as listed in the owners manual, really quiets them down.

It does not sound like you are describing noises like piston knocking, or rod knocking. If you are riding without ear plugs there is not much between you and the cylinder heads, so pinging from heat/timing/low octane, may sound different than in a cage.

Timing chain adjustment can cure some strange knock/rattle type noises.

On a hundred degree day you are running gasoline that is near boiling, the head/ intake charge temperatures are extreme. I would not make too many changes until you get to ride it on say a cool morning. If it is heat related pinging, try finding higher octane and or non alcohol fuels and even throttling it differently, as in kick it down a gear under hard acceleration. But you know all of that. We just need to confirm that it is normal for the heat situation.

The engine makes noise. It is a Harley but that sportster engine is bulletproof in my book.

Just got home from vacation. Gonna run it around town and see how it does. Got some oil filters and will change the oil next. Maybe I will go with a thicker oil.

IF that does not cure it I will look at the timing issue.

Afraid to say it but sounds like a ball peen hammer like Hughlysses says. Maybe its nothing.

Will check the horn and muffler clamps tommorow.

Thanks alot guys. Kris

The Buell XB12 engine is certainly not bulletproof...

I have watched that video before. Sounds rough. No it sounds great at idle, and great at the rpms pass around 4k. Its just that 2k to 3300 rpms. Its no where near that loud either. I tried to get a video of it but it wont do it sitting still in the parking lot. Has to be during a load/going down the road. Very hard to film and ride.

Does it have a K&N filter? When I installed my K&N, there was a noticeable increase of the intake noise. It was bad enough that I swapped back the OEM just to make sure it was the K&N let more intake noise through.

I've got a RAM mount on my bike and can set my camera to video mode and away I go. It'll pick up the engine noise that way.

Twist it up a little. It is based on an HD engine, but it is a high performance version for sure. It will ping and run rough at 2000 to 2800 especially if you run it there a long time. Try running it above 3500.
