Before leaving for a 1,600 mile trip to north east New York, I changed the primary and transmission oil. To help support EBR, I decided to use Amsoil 20-50 MC oil. I usually use Redline 20-50 MC oil.

I filled the motor up using 2.5 Quarts like normal. When cold, the oil just touched the bottom of the dip stick like normal. When arriving at my hotel, I decided to check the oil level. To my surprise, the oil was foamed nearly to the top of the dip stick marks.

Never have I seen this with the Redline oil? Has anybody seen this before with the Amsoil? After sitting for awhile, the foam dispersed.

Yes. Don't know if its bad but its at least consistently like that.

been running amsoil in the Buell for several years now and it has been that way at every post-ride oil check.

Interesting, I always check my oil with the motor idling. I would get the most consistent readings that way. The foam makes it difficult to get good level readings. I am not sure if I like this. I may need to go back to redline.

I bought a used 2010 bike, with 2700 miles on it, but before riding it away I checked everything including hot oil levels. While standing/running the oil light flashed once. Checking the oil and it was foaming and a lot at that. I NEVER had this on the 06 bike. A 5k service was done at 4k. It has been fine since with just the odd bubble on the dip stick. Both oils were HD.

Not much help to you though but I am interested to know why it happens? You do not want "foamed oil" in the engine.

I didn't get any oil lights. I never had this happen before. As I mentioned, I always used Redline oil before. Anybody else see this? If so, what type of oil?

I don't get the oil light, and to be more clear, what I see isn't foamy like the head on beer. I guess the best way to describe it is...bubbly? I didn't notice it when I was running Mobil1 V-twin 20w50.

I only notice it when I'm checking the oil level right after a ride and the bike is at idle. There are bubbles on the upper range of the dipstick. When I wipe it clean and then reinsert it to check the level a second time, it doesn't reappear.

IIRC, seems I read that Redline uses fewer detergents than others. I don't use it because it isn't available around me for some odd reason or I'd try it just to see. Amsoil uses a different formulation which may include more detergents. Then there are the anti-foaming additives and that varies from brand to brand as well.

I'm no oil genius and certainly don't want to start an oil discussion (REALLY don't want to start an oil discussion!) but figured the difference between the two brand formulations could account for what you've described. I noticed it was remarkable that Redline advertises rpoudly that they use minimal detergents and Amsoil advertises that they are (proudly?) a detergent oil.

I have never used Amsoil products, but I can't say I have seen anything like that ever with any other oil I've used... in the Uly or any other bike. Or any other type of IC engine. Weird.

"When I wipe it clean and then reinsert it to check the level a second time, it doesn't reappear." Mine was VERY foamy. Its be ok since though.

I run Amsoil 20W-50 and always see a little foam on the dipstick when checking the level with the engine not running. Not sure if it does that when checking with the engine running. I will try that next time.

Once I broke mine in, (5000 miles), I switched to AMSOIL as they are a sponsor to my racing buddy's car. I use it in everything I own and never have seen any foaming. The Uly doesn't use any oil and I check it with the motor running and it's always at the 2X mark. I doubt the problem is with the oil but it's strange that it happened after the change. I remember years ago Motorcycle Consumer News did an Oil Test and AMSOIL came out as number one with Red Line as number two. It was on their website a while back but I haven't been there in a while.
