Over the past couple of weeks I made up some handguards for the XT, and mounted the windshield differently so I can take it on and off without tools. (I use it a lot to write directions on when riding into unfamiliar territory)

The guards are made from 1" x 1/4" aluminum, bent to shape using a propane torch and a bench vise (we can't all be professionals)
Well nuts keep them in the end of the bars, 3/4" adel clamps hold them on the inboard sides.

I replaced the tall factory hardware to mount the levers and plastic guards with a handful of allen screws, lock nuts, and aluminum spacers.

I did have to remove the switchgear on both sides and file the locator pin off so I could slide them further inboard along with the grips.

I wanted to maintain some wind protection, and also didn't want to make the factory guards unusable in their original fashion. A little grinding on the back side with a dremel gave me enough clearance for the aluminum guard to pass behind it. A couple small holes drilled in the bottom allowed me to zip tie them on. Again - not very professional but I plan on all of this breaking apart or at least bending in the event of a tipover.

And finally, I wanted to be able to remove the windshield to write directions or clean off old writing at a gas station/side of the road/etc. Put well nuts on the back of the fairing so I don't have to remove it at all, nylon spacers in between the fairing and windshield, then I took 1.5" allen screws and tightened them into wing nuts so they won't come out without tools. Windshield can now be removed and installed by hand. Sorry this photo sucks, it's the only pic I have of the front right now and it wasn't taken with the this thread in mind.

Now as long as I keep a wax pencil handy, I'll always know where I'm going!

Very cool, Phillip. You've made it your own and you've added functionality at the same time! Good work! : )

No leather tassels hanging off the bar ends, either! Nice job.
