Hello All,

I am a professional engineer and like to design/fabricate in my spare time. Not being particularly impressed with the design or pricing of aftermarket racks available for the Uly, I have decided make my own.

I have built my own benders and jigs over the years and can do pretty much anything with 3/4", 1/2" and 3/8" OD tubing.

I had removable SW-Motech side racks on my strom and really liked the fact that I could remove them when not in use.

My plan is to do something similar to the Ventura system... a permanent anchor point on each side, so which I can attach whatever I want. I will have the ability to mount the top box sticking out the back (stock type installation) as well as slightly forward as I rarely if ever carry a passenger and don't like the look of the box being completely behind the taillight.

I am just wondering if anyone else has built their own racks... I have a plan in terms of mounting points and design but it never hurts to see what others have already done!

Pics would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Dave

One thing to keep in mind when re-positioning the top box. It seems to me that it would be hard to throw your leg over the seat if the box were further ahead, wouldn't it? Unless maybe you climb on while the bike is still on the side stand, which we all know is a bad idea on these things.

Sounds like a cool project. I am pretty sure I read a thread on here a few years ago about a custom job, but I believe that particular poster pretty much replicated the stock setup.

The main reason I do not have hard luggage is because I don't need luggage 95% of the time, and the bike looks ridiculous with the racks exposed. A removable side rack would be an interesting thing indeed.

For now I'm not planning to make side racks. I don't foresee doing any long trips until my kids are a little older.

My goal right now is a cargo rack any a top box.

We'll see how it goes once I get started.

I've got to get the engine back together in my wife's old 250 ninja before I can clear enough space to start.

I like to plan things well in advance so that i have a clear path once i begin.
