Rode 100 miles to meet others for lunch in Guffey, Co. On the return I chose a different route (you all can probably relate to this) and this meant riding north on a road I typically ride south on. I was reminded how different the "texture" of a ride can be by simply riding a road in a different direction. Is this true for any of your in-the-vicinity rides? So I'm struck by the setting and pull over at the top of modest Currant Creek Pass. No one coming or going. I hang around for about ten minutes, alone, then hear the rumble in the distance. I fish my Droid phone out of the pocket to take a pic. Can place or imagine yourself here. Can see the empty winding road in the distance...  You know, while Currant Creek Pass on Colorado 9 south of Hartsel isn't that high in elevation, it is an example that pass elevation quantity does not necessarily equate to pass riding quality. Yes? So a descent is made and I have to pull over for a sight the Ute Indians would behold in this area 170 years ago. I'm not sure anything has changed since then while looking this direction. No sign of man made intervention. Looks like it was a good year to have some offspring...  Just a little further and I pass this tree. I ride a little further. OK, I have to turn around. What a valiant effort to survive alone in these high and windswept meadows of South Park. From the scraped and thinned bark, possibly it was the bison it couldn't overcome. Not a whole lot has changed this direction either. I wait for the clouds to part...  And yes, this sweet thing delivered the journey!  } | ||

Kind thoughts all. This truly is a special bike. But you know that. The real reason I paused here was for the bike, and the sweet road up ahead it was eager to go for. That another bike came along, and some bison were just relaxin nearby, and that standalone tree... was all bonus. | ||

Well I was just wondering if there was one near Steve. (Sfarson) Might be a good place to meet. Thanks for the list 4_pete_sake. I've been to every brewery in Ft. Collins and to Tommyknockers. I've had Left Hand and Avery before but not been to the brewery. And boulder is on my list this trip since there's a brewery on every corner! I've been to many more in Colorado but not every one so my mission is not accomplished! I will probably have the Scorpion trails on it by then. As long as it's not too wet I'll be fine. I went to some amazing places with syncs last time! Jeff and Julie, I will contact you before I head out. All is not in stone yet but pretty close. I'm sure I'll be in Summit county. Actually I have a great story about Summit County. I don't think Steve will mind if I Hijack for a moment! A friend and I were going skiing and were staying in Siverthorne/Dillon. We went to the Mexican Restaurant just north of 70. I nursed one beer while waiting for a table and then ordered a margarita. When I was half way through my dinner I started getting dizzy. I tried to stand up but went face first into my food! Then I stood up and fell like a tree. My friend tried to catch me but he wasn't quite big enough and I hit the floor. I went into a spasm for 20 seconds they tell me, all I know was I was fighting a large monster with all I had! When I woke up I found out that the local EMT's just happened to be there finishing their dinner. They couldn't get a gurney in there so after a while I thought I could walk and made it to the ambulance. While bouncing down a snowy road the female EMT was able to hit a vein on the first try! I was impressed! Then she went for some tape but the drawer was empty so she stuck my arm between her legs and bent waaaay over to reach another drawer which put her rather large breasteses in my face. I looked up at her partner and said, "This ain't all bad!" I thought he might roll out the door. Well I was just dehydrated and they filled me up with 2 bags of glucose and I was good to go. So I've learned my lesson the hard way but I have a memory I'll never forget! (Message edited by tootal on June 19, 2012) | ||

Avery makes some wonderful beer... tap room is nice but in a weird location....only beer but you can order food from next door... Left Hand has great ambiance and often will have live music ...free.... great beer gear as well.. pretzels or chips for food only.... Oskar Blues has AWESOME brew pub / restaurant / concert venue in LONGMONT... it would be almost a one stop shop. Tons of Colorado beers on tap.. I would guess 30+ and GREAT food... southern bbq home cooking and more... really good!!! Cannery is not far away if you want the more traditional feel... and by traditional I mean you'll smell like hops and mash when you leave, but super nice people there. You can easily do both Left Hand and Oskars in the same evening or day and then head 15 minutes to Boulder up 119.... keep going West on 119 and you pick up the "Peak to Peak" ride.... very fun... Put me on the meet up list or notification list of your arrival. Always love seeing another Buell. And I be happy to help with directions or ideas. Cheers -pete | ||

Julie and Jeff - I almost forgot... while the Dam Brewery in nice, in Frisco, Backcountry Brewery's espresso stout on nitro is so damn good my friends and I can rarely pass it up after a day on the slopes... nachos are great there too... certainly not knocking the Dam thou... Cheers- pete | ||

As a matter of fact there are several good brew pubs in Summmit county and the Backcountry Brewery was our first go to spot, especially since I installed the store front on the place when it was being built in '96. Looking forward to meeting a few folks. That's one reason I like to take an occasional solo trip. I don't have as many arguments! I haven't found anybody that travels exactly like I like so when I get to do a solo trip it's a wonderful thing. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy traveling with friends but sometimes you just need to do it your way! | ||

Well, that's where I'm at. I've sampled many in Colorado and want to keep the theme going. A new twisty road ending near a brewery I haven't experienced. Remember, a good beer can be judged with merely a sip, buts it's better to be thoroughly sure! czech proverb. | ||

Wow man! Just took my emotions for a roller coaster. First excitement for the open road and the sense of adventure, then tranquil as I get sucked in by the words and beautiful scenes before me, then excitement again knowing I too have a uly waiting for me, then depression as I have to work in the blazing hot sun for the next 9 hours. This has to be what it feels like to be a woman! Keep it up man, thanks alot. | ||

Tootal, A dry year for sure. Those mostly affected by the fires would have lived in the foothills west of Fort Collins or the western suburbs of Colorado Springs. Other fires burning are remote. Would also note containment is achieved or almost achieved with the few fires remaining. All roads are open now, and only two notable roads were closed. Here in Central Colorado I've received rain six of the past seven days at my place. Today I met two other riders and we rode the roads noted at the top of this thread. I probably rode in rain for two+ hours, and it was a c-c-c-cold steady rain! Temps were in the 50's. | ||

I was going to start my ride in Ft. Collins and end up in Colorado Springs so I guess I'll get to see the damage for myself! Wow, 50 degrees and rain, sounds like heaven to me!! It's so dry here and it's been 100 plus for over a week! When you work in a old brick building with no AC it just becomes an oven! Looking forward to some elevation! | ||

We drove down thru SD into Wyoming then to Fort Collins, CO. Saw some fire damage in WY but nothing like in CO. Visited the AF academy yesterday but did not drive out far enough to see damage. The worst we've seen up close and personal was west of Ft. Collins towards Poudre. The neighbors told a story about an 85 y.o. man who lost everything and is living in a tent. They are heading up to visit him this weekend to bring him supplies, hopefully he'll be ok. My friend hosted fire evacuee coworkers for a week. Their home was ok, but their neighbors lost theirs. She was freaked about that fire as she could see the ridge on the rockies burning from her house in Fort Collins. Heard startling statistics about how many people that lost homes were without insurance. Sad but it could have been worse for more. Thank God for the firefighters and for the rain we've been getting. | ||

Sorry got off on the fire tangent. The only time I'd ever seen such widespread fire damage was in 1998 in Florida. The roads in Colorado are awesome. I am envious of all y'all that live here. |
