For one reason or another I have not been able to ride a bike for over seven months now. Not good.

The 2010 Uly had been left outside under a cover with the battery Negative lead removed. I put it back on two weeks ago and it started first time. Left it on and it started first time today. Something the 06 bike would/did have a problem with.

In the past I have had the odd week/month off a bike and it strange how you can forget some of the good and bad points of a bike so I thought I would see how it was with the Uly and post the details. The bike is set up for me though.

The first thing I noted was the superb nature of the frame and suspension. Totally neutral with no weird handling problems at all at any point fast or slow. The Scorpion rubber was great on a mix of fast/slow wet and dry roads. Great feedback in VERY fast bends on bad roads with manhole covers, grit, water, holes and such with no problem. Very stable.

I can run/control the bike in first gear, at idle, at 10 mph without the need to slip the clutch. Even if you change up to second you can just pull away. Its almost "twist and go". Amazing engine control for this "Old Iron" lump.

The fueling is smooth and glitch free with no flat spots. I have a Piper air filter and Stealth can and get the odd pop on decel. Even after a long fast thrash the parts under the sub frame, main frame, engine etc are not hot. Unlike a 06 bike.

This bike is not run in yet at 4k in my opinion. The engine is still a little tight. Another 3k will make it work better and help smooth the 2k rpm lumpyness as well. Anything over 2700 rpm is fine though. Spin it at 3k rpm plus works the best.

Ok so what is my, best I can do, honest opinion of the 2010 bike if today was the first time I had ever rode one.

On the 2010 bike? The 2000rpm vibes may put some off the bike but you get used to it. It is NOT a "off road" bike it is a tall sports/tourer but it can "green lane". It is not a 150mph plus bike? A bit tall for some.

All I can say is that I would have done the same sort of deal, as with any other bike dealer like Honda, on this bike if it had been the way the 2010 bike was/is. I might have even paid FULL PRICE.

I know what you mean about it not being run in yet. My 2008 took a good 12,000 to 15,000 to feel "right" to me.

It feels like my 06 bike when it was at 3000 miles but it was run in by 6000 miles. Maybe it did because it run so hot. The 2010 bike is nothing like as hot. I think I will fire up the ECM-SPY to see what temps it is doing. If I remember right the fan on the 06 bike would come on at 220C. I do not think the 2010 bike is getting that hot because even after a "hard run", and the fan does not come on while standing/stop either, you can just about touch the primary and tranny cases. The 06 bike would "burn your face off" from a foot away? I am not kidding I recon you could toast muffins on it.

I will also check what temp the oil cooler is cutting in. I do not know what controls this on these bikes. They used to be a mechanical thermostatic "by-pass" and it could be the same. The 06 bike never seemed to work and the 2010 works 100% but it may not be controlling right. The oil needs to be at the right temp.

There also seems to be a more HEAVY thumping vibs at 2500 rpm than I remember from last time I rode it or the 06 bike. The mirror vibs seem the same and you still get the "more on the right than left" thing.

I can feel the engine a lot more through the bike on "gas off" decel. Its hard to explain but it was not like that the last time I rode it. This bike has a lot of engine braking while the 06 on had very little. But that I think is a fuel/timing change.

I need to do some checks.

The fan programming on your 2010 is vastly different than your old 06, the 2010 really needs to be cooking for it to kick the fan on below 15mph

Thank you for your input Froggy.

Yes this is true. The bike does not "cook" like the 06 bike did. Which does make life with it a LOT better. As you have said the 2010 bike is a whole new beast. Now that I have found what I need to know about the oil cooler I am going to spend some time going through how things work on this bike.

I have to say though that I am a little dissapointed with the lack of oil cooler temp control. On another air cooled engine type bike I guess it would be ok but the XB is not the same.

Its just me but I quite like the idea of engine oil being at the right temp all the time even if the temp band on a air cooled motor is wider than most.

I have not been on the Uly for around a month now.
I really screwed up my back in April and have been limping along since then. I had a friend buy a bike and he wanted me to ride home with him. Amazingly I was able to do it pain free for 4 hours!
The Uly did what 4 doctors and 2 chiropractors couldn't!

Well now this is VERY strange. As said I have not either and have had a bit of a bad back as well. I still have to drag my right leg over the bike, an old hip problem, but only two days on the bike and my back is a lot better? It must be all those air cooled V-Twin vibrations working the right body parts. I never noted it on any other bikes I have had? They made is WORSE.

Of course some of this could just be "in the head" but its a fact that happy people are fitter people.

Just as a matter of interest. These cheppo LED mirrors work great and much easier to adjust than the Aprilia ones.

And if you are going LED just replace the relay. Simple, easier and cheaper.

So where did you get the cheap mirrors?
