Probably an easy ? but I need to ask anyway. Can someone tell me whether the Uly runs a 6volt or 12 volt system

Please, no offense, but that is one of the stranger questions I've seen here, 12V

Ronmold,
None taken. If I wasn't hampered by my complete lack of electrical knowledge, I wouldn't have asked. Sort of funny because I own a Uly. Anyway I bought a new horn from PIAA and it has this tiny warning on the box about it only being for a 12v system.
Thanks for your quick response. Now on to the install.

You may need a relay if it takes a lot of current. The instructions will state that and may include a relay. I don't think the Uly switch & wiring is good for more than 5 or 6 amps but I'm not really sure of the factory horn current draw.

A air horn will need a relay a normal one should not.

Druelly. Again no offense but this bike can be a real challenge even for those who do know bike electrics and for HD as well? I would, with the greatest respect, advise you to not mess with the electrics to much. A horn is simple enough though.

The great thing about a forum is no one will ever know who actually asks the question. Notice I didnt say stupid question because there aren't any. If you dont know something chances are many more dont know. When the answer pops up many are enlightened!!
I dont post much but I lurk and these guys have been there and helped many times. I dont even know where the Harley dealer in my area is.
The simplest but common thing Ive learned here is check your ground attachment. Especially after poking around uder the seat. I dont even know what they do but if not tight your bike will run poorly. Thanks to all of you.

Druelly, when you locate the horn (if you do it under the flyscreen), make sure it doesn't impede the wire harness bundle from moving freely. You want to swing the bars from full left to full right lock, and make sure the wire bundle can move wherever it wants without touching anything.

I think that will prevent some of the wire breakage issues people are having.

Thanks for all the excellent advice. I do have a friend that is an excellent resource to bounce some ideas off of as he is well versed in electrical systems of motorcycles, cars, boats, and motor homes. Sometimes he can get a bit ornery if I ask lots of questions. He owns a 2011 police special HD and he and his wife spend most weekends traveling so during my free time he is usually out of town. Again thanks for the help!

Hope your airhorn install is going great. I installed an air horn and the only modification to the stock uly was to remove the old horn. I installed the air horn under the flyscreen in the location of the old horn. I think I might have put a bigger fuse (10A to 15A) in but can't remember for sure. Replaced all the existing horn parts and wired it up. So easy I can't even remember a problem. I was already doing open heart surgery on her to replace 2 bent side fairings (my uly rode me for about 10 ft)

The horn I used btw was a stebel Nautilus compact - http://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade/productview/2 137/?gclid=COvOx5OZu7ACFQfrKgodbhPurw

PLEASE GUYS NO?

With a air horn you MUST use a relay as it can/will pull a large load. The reason for a relay is so it will not to overload the wiring or switch gear. Using a bigger fuse is NOT THE WAY TO DO IT and bad electrical practice. Sooner or later it will burn out the contacts of your horn switch and you may need a new part which will cost lots of money and time.

Its your bike though.

PS - Read the instructions that come with the air horn.

Sorry for the confusion. The Stebel came with a little black thing that I wired in per the instructions. I think that's your relay you mentioned.. but like I said... LIKE A GLOVE!
