I have a 2008 xb12xt that has the 2009 ecm firmware in it.

While recently doing my 10k maintenance (changing spark plugs) I took it for a test ride with the air cover removed. I noticed that I could not get the exhaust actuator to do anything, even after it warmed up and pushing it at 70mph on back roads.

The service manual is useless for actual systems diagnosis so I need to know under what circumstances the thing should engage, and whether it is working at all.

Thoughts?

Unless you have an E.B.R. race ECM you should get a CEL if the actuator is not working. That is disabled on the race ECM, at least it is on mine, as neither my Hawk or Drummer use the actuator. When my actuator crapped out my choices were to spend $$ on a new one or use the $$ to help upgrade my muffler and ECM and actually get a bit more performance for my money. I don't know how to check it, but I would think that you should be getting that check engine light if your bike can not use it as intended.

It can be tested, by pulling the air box cover turning on the key (do not start bike) cycle run/ stop switch on right switchgear. It should be moving which is very noticeable

On my 07 you have to turn on the ign (with the kill switch off), roll the throttle all the way on then off again, then flip the switch to run and it cycles the actuator.

I don't recall where I learned this, maybe one of the local guys told me how to do it. Anyway I'm not sure if it is a valid function test on the newer models. Good luck.

I think for the test to happen, the throttle has to be wide open.

As per 2006 service manual. a.Hold the throttle wide open. b.Turn the engine cut- off switch to RUN. c.Turn the ignition/light key switch ON.d.Watch the actuator cycle close/open/close.

Right, hold WOT to test. On the 08 and up this also does the supposed spark plug cleaning. I say supposed because it didn't help me when I needed it, still had to change the plug.

Agreed that you will get a CEL if it's not working properly. Mine broke last fall and the light went on. It took a while to get the part. It was on backorder (big surprise) but the dealer was able to source one from another dealer.

The plug clearing procedure can require three or four repeats, depending how fouled the plug(s) is (are) to begin with. With repeated activations, I've always been able to get bikes running properly without a plug change - and this is on our old RENTAL XT, as well as bikes we had in inventory.
