Got home yesterday and out my kickstand down. Went to get off the bike and let the kickstand take the weight only to find the bike wanted to hit the deck. Realized something was up with the stand so I leaned the bike against the post on my carport.

After looking at the stand I saw that the two left most bolts had snapped right off leaving the bolt shafts in the bottom of the engine case. So I'm thinking I need to remove the muffler and EZ out the shafts. I question I have is this: I read something about somebody using a torocata clamp (spelled wrong)for the front muffler strap and that it was cheaper than stock. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

Thanks!

Whoa! Bolts snapped on an almost new bike, a 2009! Any idea why? Cheap bolts? Kickstand hit HARD a number of times? They should last decades! I hope you get some good input on the bolt replacement and muffler clamp, Whisper.

The '06 Uly had a recall on the side stand assembly and the fixing bolts, for breakage.
There was much discussion as to why the bolts broke; but it's not worth rehashing here.

Whisper... if you're lucky the bolt stubs should unscrew with some pliers or needle nose vise grips. If not, try using a left handed drill; if that does not work there will be a hole to use an easy-out.

Far as the Torca clamp goes. I've had the muffler off and on my '06 Uly several times and have reused the Torca clamp as well as the muffler straps. Do not over torque the straps or you will collapse the muffler.

It's important when refitting the muffler on the bike. To make sure it is fully seated on the upper mounts before torquing the straps and Torca clamp nut.

What I do is, lube the header with antiseize, so it slips easily into the muffler. Then lift the muffler (I use a floor jack) into place. Fit the straps and snug them just enough to ensure the muffler has firm contact with the upper mounts see serv manual for torque specs.
Note: the strap specs are in inch pounds...

When the muffler is properly seated, it's time to torque the Torca clamp nut. Finish by doing final torque on the straps.

Get Grade 8 bolts for the sidestand, and use loctite.

I did mine about three years ago, when I noticed a little play in the stand. Caught the bolts in "stretch" mode, before "break".

You don't get on the bike while it's on the sidestand, do you? I know some people do...never a good idea. Stand the bike up first, THEN get on.

Not enough to grab with needle nose vise grips, tried it already. Broke pretty much flush. Left hand bit is next up. Around here it's not easy to find grade 8 bolts. I have to go 60 or miles to the nearest hardware store that has a decent selection of them.

Yup. I'm 260lb and 5'10", a bit round you could say.

Thanks for tips guys!

I've had some experience with this. Left hand drill bit is good if you got them. If you have a welder, weld the center of the nut to the broken bolt. It will come out easy.

I don't think you want to use Grade 8's there. I thought about it but decided I'd rather have the bolts break than the case. The stock bolts weren't grade marked on my bike but seemed pretty cheesy. I went with as long of Grade 5 bolt as I could and used loctite. good luck!

There is nothing "cheesy" about the stock fasteners.
When the problem first presented. A fellow Badwebber posted photos of the bolts that broke on his bike.
The engineers that I worked with concluded, that the bolts most likely broke because there was insufficient clamping of the side stand bracket to the engine case.
They concluded that the bolts were under torqued.
The why was never divulged by Buell/H-D. But, they speculated that a robot failed or the dry thread lube/locking compound was expired.

The grade 5 bolts you used will probably be fine, long as you have them properly torqued... But maybe not.

interesting bolt grading info can be found here:

Thanks, Teeps. Has it been a common problem? Any particular years? What can we do to prevent it? Thanks.

'06 Ulysses were involved in a recall for both the fixing bolts (breaking) and the pivot bolt (breaking.)
The fixing bolts, from what I could see, were the same as the originals.
The side stand assembly, including the bracket, arm/foot, pivot and return spring were all redesigned.
In fact the new bracket mounted to the engine, on later years('08>?) with 3 bolts.

Here's the thread from July 06 that discusses this subject.

It happened to my 07 Uly 3 weeks ago, I was lucky only one bolt snapped, the other one had stretched and bent and come half out.
The broken one had enough shank left for me to wind out with pliers.
I replaced them with grade 8 bolts...
