I'm on my second set of the 009 Shinko Ravens and am having a front tire issue - the same one I had on the first set.

When it gets hot, the tire looses air. I put both sets on at about the same time of year - in winter. But now that it is getting hot, I'm loosing air again. Last year I found the air was leaking from between the tire and the rim, but have not found out where it is coming from this year. By the time I replaced the fist set the front had to be aired up every day.

I'm wondering if anybody else has had this problem, and if so, what their solution was.
I'm wondering if, as it gets hot, the tire is expanding too much and no longer fits the rim correctly. And after an entire summer of it being expanded, it stays that way even when it starts to cool down.

I'm not going to get another tire if I can help it at all. And over all the 009's have been great tires for me. The cost vs. mileage is unbeatable, and they perform good enough for me.

Any thoughts on trying slime or another sealer?

Thanks for any help!

I'd pull the tire off and see if you have something wedged between the rim and tire, like a small metal shaving.

I am having the same problem with my Blast. I put two new tires on last year. The front has leaked at the bead since I put it on. The rear started leaking at the bead during the winter.

I have broken both tires back down and re-cleaned the beads and found nothing. Using an old mechanic's trick of wiping the tire's bead with brake fluid did nothing to help.

I got a can of professional tire installers bead sealing stuff. It is a black goo that comes in a can with a brush. I am about to get back to that project tomorrow. I am sure it will work.

I had the same problem. Super Glue works great. I then fill the tire with expanding foam.

Front Raven does the same to me, about 4# per week if I let it go. Rear stays constant. I won't be buying these again, the rear will be finished soon at less than 7K, and although they've gripped fine for my needs the handling due to the profiles just bugs me. Gonna try these in a couple weeks: http://www.motosport.com/motorcycle/product/CONTIN ENTAL-MOTION-TIRE-COMBO/?id=118071#BVRRWidgetID

It may not be your tire.
Put some water in your valve and see if it blows bubbles.

I have fixed a lot of slow leaks with this tool:

If it's a consistent problem with Ravens...it could be "cheap tire / crappy bead surface". If the tire bead ain't smooth...

On my lawn tractors, I've had good luck with the "fix-a-flat" in an aerosol can. Spray some into the tire RIGHT BEFORE USING THE VEHICLE, that way it doesn't just pool at the bottom of the tire before it dries. Just remember it's in there before you dismount the tire, in case someone is welding or grinding nearby, because of the urban-myth about sparks and tire sealants.

+1 on having a valve stem core remover in the garage. I used to have an old tiny flat screwdriver I cut a notch in...but now I have the real thing. Excellent to have. I painted mine bright orange with construction marking paint, to "reduce" my chances of losing it ; )

i've had no problems with air leakage on either of my sets of shinko's 009 ravens.

but the profile sux. the rear looses it's shape, and the handling suffers. no fall-in and you gotta push to keep a line.

30 years ago most rubber was not great and some was total sh+t.

Today we, as bikers, have a vast selection of rubber most of which is great and costs less than it did even 15 years ago because they have perfected machine made bike rubber.

Anyone, of course, can put what they like on there bike but putting a Shitco on a bike that handles like a Uly is just a waste of the bikes true worth. Its like you can put any strings on a guitar but good ones will make it sing. And a Uly can SING?

Uly-man, what tires -tyres where you come from, haha - have you run on your Uly?

Since the original Dunlop D616's, I've had a Dunlop Roadsmart, a Pirelli Diablo Strada, a Continental Conti-Motion, and a couple of sets of Shinko 009s on the back wheel. None of them last - I put on my sixth rear at just over 18K. But, as far as handling goes, I find the Shinkos even with the Pirellis and better than the Dunlops and the ContiMotions.

Aren't all the Shinkos tubed tires? If that's the case, then you need to be running a tube - or so my tire changing guy tells me. At one time I wanted to put a shinko on my Uly and he told me not to for this reason. The shoulder of a tubeless tire rim is different than that of a tubed tire rim. Good luck.

I ran a set of 009's with none of the problems noted above, except they only lasted 9600 miles.

Xbimmer, I have a set of Continentals on my Ulysses now.
The don't feel as grippy as the Bridgestones, so I'm hoping they last longer than 5k miles.

Here's what the front looked like before replacement, at around 9600 miles.

The aramid belts in the shinko's run very close to the surface of the bead. I suspect it makes the bead more difficult to seal. I had the same problem on one of my three shinkos so far. My front stopped leaking when the weather warmed up. Shinkos are not tubed tires either. Shinko bought Yokohama's Molds and technology years ago. Some of the best tires out there back in the day.

Xbimmer - I ran the conti motions for quite awhile. About on par with Shinko's but lasted a few thou longer. I didn't like the fact that there is no tread making it the center of the tire. If your riding causes you to wear out the middle first it is hard to judge when you should change the tire. By the time I hit the closest wear indicator I had some cords showing!

My 06 bike came with the upgrade Scorps and I changed them at 5k. I then tried Corsa 3s and they only lasted (you could see them wear out day by day) 2.5k and I did not like them much on the bike. It then had 2CTs which had a bad puncture so I fitted another set, because they worked so well on the bike and with 7k on them they would have lasted to 10k easy.

If you ride the bike very hard you may get less than 5k out of a rear and more so with all that torque. The 2CT is a duel compound tire - harder in the middle for better miles and softer on the edge for better grip.

Lots of things will make rubber wear faster. Over pressure tires and hot tarmac/weather are the worse. Try a set of 2CTs sometime. I love them and can find no fault with them on the Uly. I have also never come across anyone who has used them and not liked them. Maybe thats the reason I, and I HAVE tried, can never find them discounted. They do not need to.

After my third set of tyres I also noticed an little air lost. At the last change I asked the tyre mechanic to let me take the rims home. With water, some soap and a scratching sponge (like the one used for dishes) I eliminated all the crap till the contacting surfaces were clean as new.

No more appreciable air lost.

Uly_man: Try a set of 2CTs sometime.

I'll look into them next time I'm buying - I'd be delighted to get even 5K out of a rear tire. Thanks for the recommendation.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I run the shinkos because I get 10K plus out of them at $185 a SET to my door. They grip good enough and money is tight.

The best set I've put on so far is the dunlope roadsmarts, great wear, and handling.

Oh ya, before I put this set on, I thoughly fine sanded and cleaned the wheel along the bead.

No problems with the Shinkos here either. I've got about 3500 miles on them and they look brand new.

Never again with the Pirelli's. Only 4500 out of the rear. That's not acceptable.

I run PR3's since I don't take my Uly off road and use it to commute, very pleased with its wet grip and tread life, very nice in the corners, all around good grip.

I've had at least four different sets of Shinko's on different bikes (Sportsters, Ulysses, Moto-Guzzi) with no problems in any of the noted applications. For the money, they're great tires, IMO. I don't race or even really ride hard, mostly touring/freeway riding and around town, so they work fine for me.
