And I cannot believe that the bike with the most model-specific, newly designed parts in Yamaha's lineup was called a "parts bin bike" on a Buell forum. It doesn't get more parts bin than an XB!!!

I chuckled at that comment also. Wow. I love my Uly but I don't wear the blinders. The Yamaha looks like a great bike. When I rented the GS last year in Spain I did not like that feeling of having so much bike in front of me, so I wonder if the Yamaha would be similar. When I got back from Spain, I was somewhat nervous getting back on the Buell because it felt soooooo naked in the front.

There is a LOT of Super Tenere in front of you. I know it is better for element protection (I prefer to be out in the elements personally), but it is definitely something I would have to get used to again on just about any bike. Like I said, I will miss that unicycle feeling. That single characteristic makes it so hard for me to part with the Uly despite the angst.

Thanks for the write up Mike. Very good for a rank amature! But nothing beats real world seat of the pants comparisons and think about it, we'll never read another Uly comparison in a magazine ever again, so for this I say Thank You.
I think you're right about the leaning over quicker being the skinnier tires. When I flog my XR600 down a twisty paved road I can throw that thing down alot easier than my uly. I attest that to the tires. I also agree with the statement that the Yammie fits the gap between the KTM adventurer and the GS. I believe the Uly is a whole different animal altogether. It's amazing how much this segment has changed in the 6 yrs since the Uly came out. I think the Yam does the best job of bringing all these technologies together for one big compromise. And it's a good one, I'm impressed. I've had lots of yamahas in the past and have always considered them to be well built/thoughtout. They'll never win awards for inspiring or original ideas, but more for excellent engineering and value. Just my take on Yamaha.
Our Uly's on the other hand, like all the buells, are about inspiring, as-naked-as-you-can-get, raw enjoyment of motorized two wheels. Heck the Uly is the most farkled up Buell you could buy and even that isn't saying much compared to the Duc or the Yamaha. But I think we pay a price in the reliability dept, and that's huge especially when you're considering using these things for adventures. Unfortunatly I can't afford multiple adventure bikes. Multiple bikes, yes, but they all do something different for me.
So the trade off is; brute torque, naked, stripped down race bike fun, that's easy to work on(and you need to) in an adventures clothing that fewer and fewer riders have anymore, or dependable, flexible, good dealer support, all the latest bells n whistles, more fuel and a lot more money cause there's no used ones yet. You decide. I'm lucky, I don't have to decide. My Buell hasn't broke down on me - yet.

Mike, Great write-up and fair comparison of the two, but that's not really why I'm here.

Just wanted to take a moment to both wish you well on the new wheels, and to thank you for all of your contributions to our world over the years. You've been one of the guys that I've stolen the most Uly ideas from, and I'm mostly just a little bummed that I won't be able to continue copying your setup as you further refine things ; )

Cheers man, and here's to many excellent adventures ahead.

I have a Kawasaki Concours and the shaft drive could well be called a proven and trusted system. If you run a search on Ebay you will the parts are very cheap. Yamaha shaft drive parts are often 10 times more expensive than the Kawasaki parts its because they break. Be sure an lube the splines on the back end of the drive shaft every time you change the tire. Yamaha's shaft drive is only proven to be a very weak link in my opinion. Mean while I love my Uly. It is the coolest bike I have ever owned though it is a little tall. And given it is so much fun my shaft will probably last forever. I did look at a Yamaha myself and think it is a very cool bike. I would love to ride one someday.

No heated grips or rear suspension compression adjustment on a bike of this type and cost is not very good AT ALL.

I do not know about this bike but suspension quality/longevity is not one of the best points of most any bike from Japan. All of the bikes from the "big four" have good and bad traits. Like Suzys have super slick gearboxes and Hondas do not. Yams have rubbish charging problems. Ok so thats a bit general and things have moved on. We will see how things work out.

The Uly is a V-Twin and the Super-T is a In-Line twin. Same size pots but thats about it. "Chalk-n-cheese" apart from revs.
