Seems like I can't open my eyes anymore without seeing the term

MASS CENTRALIZATION

used in analyses, descriptions, etc. Most recently (today) the sales video for the new Ducati 1199 Panigale.

Erik Buell used to be the only one who mentioned mass centralization. Everybody else is still catching up.

Anyway, I find that interesting...and I'll never part with my '06 Uly!

Ducati has been very big on mass centralization for the past 20 years or so. Look up some unfaired pictures of Ducs from the beginning of their undertail muffler era. With the exception of the mufflers, the entire engine, fuel, rear suspension, and electrics, are packed into a tight, dense, brick. Extensions from the brick pick up the front suspension, rear wheel, and support the rider.

Makes the bikes "fun" to maintain.

>>>exception of the mufflers

Which of course are one of the heaviest elements of the motorcycle.

While Ducati was settling for compromises, but was engineering solutions.

It's gratifying to see so many fine companies outright copy Buell engineering.

The rising tide of design excellence.

And you'll find that many riders have no idea that Buell truly established this concept, not just as a "feature" on one of its models, but as the best way to design a performance bike. They often hand the credit to some long ago company from the 70s or early 80s.

Anyone else notice that Ducati is now owned by a well known german company? VW! I think the Daevil has a bigger motor than the bug.
