Guy selling a 2006 Uly near me. Has 5xxx miles on it. I've read through all the issues with the 2006 year and just can't decide if it's worth it. He wants $4500. What do you guys think? Is it worth navigating the problems with an 06 6 years later?

Err yes and no?

Yes. If its in good condition, with good rubber, it runs right, no damage and you think the owner has looked after it/knows something about Buells. You are happy with the smaller (over later bikes) turning circle and able to fix any up coming faults yourself. Have long legs. At 5k ish its barely run in yet so make sure its had at least two oil/filter changes in the past.

No if any of the above.

It seems like a fair price. Better if it has extras like a FST, low seat, luggage, etc. You can get a lot of the same problems on later bikes so dont worry on that issue. You will need to fix them which ever year you buy.

The Uly is one of the best bikes I ever had but you can not treat it like Hondas and such. It needs a little thought and effort to get the best from it but if you do you will be amazed at how good it can be.

Oh and unlike some other bikes, at least for me, that first ride smile happens every time you ride it. Thats worth $4500 of my money anytime. Good luck.

That's a great price if the bike is in good shape.

No worries with an 06,mines been trouble free.

Bypass the "77" connector or replace it with the updated one and you'll be good to go.

Thanks for the reply.

It has had a couple oil changes. The owner is original and bought it from the local stealership in 06. I don't think he's much of a mechanical bike guy so he may or may not have noticed issues within those first 5000 miles. I do know that those miles were mostly racked up on long trips.

I'm ok with the larger turn radius and I can fix anything that goes wrong. I'm thinking I may try and talk him down a little more and then just make some of the standard corrections right away.

I guess I just didn't want to get into a situation where I buy a bike then right away have to sink a bunch of money into repairs. With 5000 miles on it thought, I think I can catch most of them before they happen.

I don't think you can go wrong. Test ride and listen for loose crank nut. Never have had that as a problem on my 06 but I did go to the effort of checking mine for that reported possibility. Heck of a bike for way less than half what I gave for mine new back in oct of 05'. Make sure the kick stand color is black, if gray then dealer needs to do recall and change to safer side stand from 07' model.

Kellen. It sounds like you know what you are on about and looked into this bike very well. From what you say it would tick all the right boxes for me. As EG said big bike for little money.

I would test ride it with $4000 in my back pocket and see what happens. Saying that though if I was in your town I may pay the full price. Sometimes it is worth paying a little more for a sound bike with a good history. Works for me.

PS - Check the paint on the engine cases and rear sub-frame for corrosion.

Thanks for the advice Uly man. I will definitely check for corrosion. The can has the normal rust that will have to be fixed and I noticed that the oil cooler lines have some decent oxidation on them. Other than that, it looks great.

Any Uly would have to be in REALLY poor shape to not to be able to deliver $4500 worth of fun.

The rust on the can is just surface rust, cosmetic and no big deal. The metal is so thick it will take many years to rust out. I had a Remus can on my 06 bike with a K&N filter and a Remus Powerizer and it run great.

FWIW, the black high temperature engine paint is working MUCH better on my XB exhaust can than the black BBQ paint ever did.

check the rocker boxes for any oil and try to find some faults so you can work on the price a bit, it was what i did when i got many years ago a cb250, didn't get much of but a few paint chips and a bit of rust made the price get to the place i was expecting to pay.

Dupli-color "Exhaust Black w/ceramic" spray bomb is outstanding paint for the money. I use it on all my VW Beetle aftermarket header/exhaust pipes/mufflers and it holds up well.

FWIT you can find an 08 for close to the same price if you look hard enough.

But yes $4500 would be a good deal.

I can confirm this. On the other hand, there are a bunch of 07 and older XBs listed on here/ebay/craigslist for more.

25k miles and I've replaced one belt at 13k, and a 77 connector at around 11k. I put on a new front rotor with EBR mounts when the kit came out. I also just put a '10 rear wheel on as PM.

I ride the snot out of it regularly.

Don't think I've washed it yet.

Other than the items above, and my elective change to '07 progressive rate fork springs at 10k, all I've done is gas, oil, and tires.

Oh...and a headlight bulb.

And I LIKE my manual idle speed adjust, thankyouverymuch : )

Yes I read that, hence I was trying to steer him to a 08 which he can get for a few bucks more and get a potentially better bike. Like said above $4500 isn't a bad price for a 06, but there are better deals out there.

I sure as hell wouldn't take $4500 for my 06 Uly!!!

with that low mileage, that's a great deal.

Thanks for all the input guys! I went ahead and brought her home yesterday. I think I got a hell of a deal. One thing I always have to take into account is that the market out here in Boise ID is pretty limited. There's very little supply so things tend to move pretty quick. Drives the prices a little higher, but overall I think I got a good deal.

Gonna drop the can tonight and paint it, change the oil, start working on the oxidation on oil cooler and rear shock, check the air filter and just give here a good once over.

I'd really like to find a local company to dip my plastics in a Multicam pattern. Just to personalize it a little. I also saw that on EBR.com you can buy the new EBR decals. Think I'll pull off the Buell badges and put on the EBR's.

Kellen,
You got a good deal for all the bike your Uly is and its fully adjustable suspension. Get a service manual and do your best to stay away from dealerships except to buy oil filters and tran lube once in a great while. Wash your air filter once a season and reuse it. When your bike gets to 10k miles and it's still running great then just change the lubes and inspect the primary chain tightness. Probably won't need a TPS reset unless it starts acting funny and hopefully by that time you'll have downloaded ECMspy and with that you can reset the TPS yourself. From your post it sounds as if you can do your own maintenance and your bike will run way better than if some dealer tech gets his grubby non-caring mitts on it. Have a good time with your 06 because it's a great bike. Don't beat it and it will run fantastic and last a very long time.

If you're going to drop the muffler, remember that the front mounting strap is a one time use thing.

Also, Congrats on a smart purchase : )

Didn't know about the front strap being a one time use deal. I've downloaded a FSM and will go step by step for all my maintenance though, so that should help.

On another related and over talked about topic; I've spent hours reading about rear wheel bearings. I haven't even really ridden my bike yet and already have bearing anxiety.

The rubber is original and in good shape so I tire change won't be for a while, but I don't know if I should just go ahead and update my wheel bearings while I'm working on the bike anyway.

Seems to be the biggest single issue I see talked about, of course generally only people that have had problems usually talk about it and it doesn't account for the thousands that haven't had any issues.

You guys have any recommendations?

BTW, if I can figure out how to post pictures here, I'll throw up a couple of my new ride.

Congrats on the purchase!

I think what our friend Natexlh1000 is trying to say is that the front muffler strap is prone to failure, if re-used. Best to order a new one from American Sport Bike or another vendor and use the old as a back up, or toss it altogether.

Keep up on a few items and that bike will give you years of smiles!

True as written; but I've had the muffler off/on my bike at least 6 times and have yet to replace the front strap... or the torca clamp. Just don't over torque them, the values are in/lbs not ft/lbs.

Follow the mounting procedure to the letter.

Very cool, Kellen. Its good to hear from someone who knows what they are on about as well. Thank you for your post.

I have had no problems with the muffler straps or clamps on either of my Ulys. In fact they look like a quality item and I hate to think what they would cost new. Mind you I only re-use them once for a new can.

"And I LIKE my manual idle speed adjust, thankyouverymuch." So dooooooo I. Its a bit, but not to much, of a bug for me on the 2010 bike. Maybe its just me. I like to be able to control all aspects of my bikes.

"than if some dealer tech gets his grubby non-caring mitts on it" This is a little hard EG. Some, like myself, DO care about our trade/work. I am sick and tired of my work being put down because some are not a good as they should be. Its like the teacher at school keeping the whole class back because one person fu+ked up. I have done my time, paid my dues and will answer for my fu+k ups if needed as no one is perfect. In my work you are guilty until YOU prove otherwise and this seems common today. Its not right or fair. Maybe you could give the Tech a little slack as it might not be his fault.
