I took my 08 Ully into the dealership for the 20K service, after getting it back the bike now idles rough to the point of stalling and even when riding, typically when cruising at 30-40mph, it will cough, sputter, and stall, the check engine light comes on for a couple of seconds then the bike runs fine. I took the bike back to the dealership and they checked the work they did and said everything looked ok but they also had the stall issue on a test ride but there was no code from the check engine light. They say the ECM is cracked, this would be the second cracked ECM I had on this bike. They cannot test the ECM, all they can do is try to replace it and see if the issue goes away. Of coarse they don't have one in stock and I will have to wait a week or two until they get one in to try. Any ideas on what else it could be? The issue wasn't there before the service, I regularly check the ECM for damage and haven't notice anything (I do have the spacer so the seat doesn't rub on it) and this ECM isn't even a couple of years old. Ideas??? |

If your bike was running fine then the dealer only rightly assumed you wanted something different and that is what ya got. Stay away from dealerships when your ride is already righteous because they will reverse that for sure in record time. |

How much did the 20k service cost? |

Sounds like they screwed something up. The 20K service includes new plugs, I assume they re-checked the plug wire connections. I believe the ECM is covered for five years because it's an emission control device. I read that on the internet so it's gotta be true. As far as service, the more stuff you can do on your own, the better off you'll be. I've found this site to be a TREMENDOUS help in that regard. Score a shop manual before they're no longer available, it'll be the best money you ever spend. If nothing else, once you get this sorted, relocate your ECM. |

"I believe the ECM is covered for five years because it's an emission control device." The ECM, in this case is a single unit timing and fuel control device. It may be covered for 5 years in the USA but deffo is not in the EU. "I read that on the internet so it's gotta be true." |

A loose ground can also cause weird stuff to happen. You may want to check and make sure everything is tight, especially the battery terminal since they probably disconnected it to work on the bike. You may also want to reset the TPS in the event they forgot to do so. |

Do the TPS reset with the bike HOT. 9 times out of 10, it gets done when the bike is stone-cold and you get this result. |

I am with the Rat man here. If it went in running well and came out not quite so, this is the most likely culprit. I have found that it is also a good idea to check the edges of the throttle plate and the bore for carbon build up that can stop the throttle from closing all of the way. This and cold engine tuning will make it run worse than before doing a TPS reset. |

If none of that works, sacrifice a cat. It won't hurt, and what the hell, one less cat. |

There is no TPS adjustment on 08 and up so it isn't that. |

Get a list of what they did and go look around those areas. If they replaced the plugs then plug torque/plug wires would be one of the first things to check...especially that rear plug since it is hard to reach for mortals. |

The service was about $650 but I had a store credit so it was less. The tech said he rechecked everything he did, the spark plugs, the wires, the grounds,.... the only thing he saw was a crack on the ECM. He said they have no way to check the ECM except to get a new one in and see if it solves the problem which is a pretty crappy way to check something. The tech has been pretty good about calling me with updates so I have to give him credit there. |

Ooh, come on guys! Not cool. I'm NO cat fan, though many are and that's cool, and I am all for 'jokes' but talking about, or joking about, hurting a cat, or any animal, ISN'T cool. Too many morons hurt animals. |

There is no TPS adjustment on 08 and up so it isn't that. That's inaccurate. Read a manual. '07 and earlier have a manual-adjustment for the idle speed, but ALL DDFI bikes have TPS reset procedures. |

Cat.....I like mine big, yellow, on tracks, weighing about 120,000 pounds, 400 hp, and able to move incredible amounts of dirt. This OP's problem could be as simple as an unknowing mechanic fouling the plugs. Sure you have automatic plug cleaning, but that won't save ruined wet plugs. |

If I had just spent $650, or for that matter only $20, and my bike came back this way then the dealer would have a serious problem with ME? I think I am cool about most things but not if you mess with my bike. |

Ratbuell, there is a difference between the 06-07 TPS reset and the 08 and up. The earlier bikes need to be calibrated for range, the later bikes just need a zero set. I think I've read where the earlier bikes need proprietary software (or ECMSpy) to calibrate but the newer bikes can be done without any plug-ins. Etennuly, you can move a lot of dirt with a big yellow Deere, too. +1 on the fouled plugs beyond help. I fouled one, rear of course, by making too short a run in the winter. Cleaning procedure didn't do jack. |

Ratbuell, there is a difference between the 06-07 TPS reset and the 08 and up. Fully aware. Which is the point I was trying to make - you still have to do a TPS reset, even though it's a post-07 bike. The head injury didn't knock out EVERYthing I learned after working at a dealer for six years.... |

Et, this is a small state, no room for the super jumbo stuff anyways. Besides, Bambi pays the mortgage. |

To bad you have a Uly with a cracked ecm that runs bad.Do a Badweb search you may be surprised at what you find. Also search front isolator, rear wheel bearings, front wheel bearings and leaking rocker boxes, just to get started . |

Seat will break the new ECM too. Relocate the new one. Even with the stand-off piece the seat will push down on the connections to the ECM. After the new ECM and a relocate of same, Get an eBr Race ECM. You'll like it. |
