Info update : my 06 uly kickstand failed this morning. The two bolts holding stand bracket to chassis sheared off, and bike tipped over. No major damage, except for bent clutch lever, and dirt on my mesh jacket. The bike is pretty heavy to upright while on its side. Suggest checks on bolts, perhaps even upgrade them.

This was a fairly common issue with the early Ulys; there may have even been a recall for the bolts. If you get the latest OEM bolts from your dealer or American Sport Bike, you should be good to go.

There was a recall. The side stand assembly was updated along with the fixing bolts.

Look at the pivot of the side stand. The original pivot was a bolt & nut; updated pivot has a "C" clip, instead of bolt/nut.

If you have the old style. Get the bike to a H/D dealer to have the recall done.
(I see by your profile you are not in the USA)

So, here is an early link http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142838/287535.html

with more info and what I did whilst waiting for the recall.

Teeps and Hughlysses much appreciate what you are both saying. The HD dealer here does not sit well with me so I will go to an ex-HD guy to get this fixed. A couple of good quality industrial strength bolts might do the trick.

If the stand itself is fine, get some grade 8 bolts and put them in with LOCTITE. I did mine about 15k miles ago when I saw the stand was starting to loosen - the bolts were stretching - and haven't had a problem since.

I would still get the updated side stand kit. As, the failure your's suffered is not the only failure. The pivot bolt breaks too.

The side stank kit comes with new bolts.

I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I make a point of not sitting or leaning on the bike when it's on the sidestand, also. Just the fact that the stand is screwed into the engine case makes me nervous. I think I'd still rather have the screws snap clean vs. having the engine case crack in an accident. Had a guy once back into my bike (long ago-different bike) and bent the sidestand like a pretzel.

Xbimmer, thanks for the tip. Would the HD dealer still accept this recall status now that Buell and HD have parted ways ? Just asking.

Thanks again.

Recalls generally are forever, in the U.S.A.; so yes.

Contact H/D customer service, they should be able to direct you to a dealer.
