Hello,

New owner of a 2006 XB12X here. Absolutely loving it so far. I just have a question about checking the oil. The manual has instructions for checking the engine oil and I've read all the tips for doing that here. But then it goes on to say that the primary oil should be checked monthly... but doesn't seem to explain how.

Can anyone shed any light on this? I've tried to use the search function but couldn't get the search terms exactly right to find out what I needed. I just want to make sure I'm doing it right.

Thanks!

You have to remove the large cover on the clutch/primary case to inspect the level.

If oil is not leaking on the floor. Then the level should be fine.
However, if you do a lot of short trips, say less than 10 miles one way. Condensation can accumulate in the primary and contaminate the fluid.

I have only used HD Formula+ fluid, in the primary.

Step 1 - support vehicle UPRIGHT, not on the sidestand

Step 2 - remove the large clutch cover, as noted

Step 3 - proper fluid level is just below the bottom of the cover hole.

But...I have yet to use an ounce of primary fluid. Ever. As noted above - if you don't see spots on the floor or wet spots on the case...you're fine. There's nowhere for it to go. If your crankshaft seal leaks, your primary level will go UP because the engine oil on the other side of that seal is pressurized, and will get pushed into the primary.

It can also leak from where the clutch cable meets the primary, but only until it gets below that ideal level.

I have had zero primary leakage. The inspection cover is the smaller part with 2 torx screws, if you undo that you can get a general idea of the oil level and chain primary tension at the same time.

If you did not catch it in the archives, the engine oil level is happiest at about the second 'X' from the bottom. Trying to maintain the top of the fill level will have it pumping oil into the air box through the crank case breather system.

When changing the primary oil I simply put one full quart of HD's Formula + in through the upper hole where I check the primary chain for tightness.

Thanks for all the tips guys. I bought it used from a dealer and no one there knew anything about it. So I didn't have a previous owner to get some of this more useful information from. Hooray for the internet!
