Hi everyone,
I have been reading through this forum for months, but finally decided to introduce myself. A few months ago, I purchased a 2008 XB12XT (stock w/ drummer exhaust). I have obtained a lot of useful information from this site and have done a few of the common mods, thanks! I currently live in Colorado Springs, but will be moving shortly to the Vacaville, CA area. The Uly has been fun so far, but there is one thing I was never able to find a good answer on by searching through this forum. The Uly leaks fuel/vapors out of the fuel vent hose that empties near the passenger footpeg. It stinks up the garage and the pressurized gas can be heard bubbling after a ride, and it will leave a few drops of fuel on the garage floor. I do not fill the frame with fuel all the way, but stop at the bottom indent. I have read about this, but no one ever seemed to have found a solution. This does not happen every ride, but is more prevalent when it is warmer out or when the bike is ridden harder, or through more traffic! Also, is there a consensus on whether or not the ECM re-flash is desired following the Comfort Kit hardware installation? I installed the comfort kit, but it seemed like many people do not think the reflash is necessary or desired. I have not had a problem with the heat yet though, yesterday it was 17 deg on my ride in to work! Sorry for the long post. I look forward to putting many miles on the bike in the future! (currently has 6k)

Welcome to the forum, and congrats in your great ride. I can't help answer your questions, but someone more knowledgeable will be along shortly.

Thanks for posting up.

Welcome to the madness and congrats on purchasing a very fun bike. Hope you have many miles of smiles.

"I installed the comfort kit, but it seemed like many people do not think the reflash is necessary or desired."

We installed the comfort kit and had both ECM's reflashed on our Ulys (both '09's, 1 X and 1 XT). The fan running less upon bike shut down is the only real side effect I've noticed, and that is not a bad thing.

The only thing I've found that lessens the fuelly smell is not fuelling it up right before I come home. I'll usually fuel it up on my way to work instead. But, I've never noticed fuel dripping either.

"I have not had a problem with the heat yet though, yesterday it was 17 deg on my ride in to work!"

If heat does become a problem, try wearing proper riding pants. I'll wear them even (or would that be especially) during our ugly Florida summers.

BeLinda.

One thing I've started doing after fueling and parking in the garage with everything at operating temp, is to loosen the fuel cap and set it on top of the filler opening until the bike cools to ambient temp. This keeps the tank from pressuring up and forcing liquid fuel out the vent line, which keeps the garage from smelling so "gassy". Reinstall the fuel cap when cool and life's good.

Sounds like your fuel is boiling. I had the same thing happen to me last summer, on a trip when it was hotter than h-e-double hockey sticks. Do you experience this in cold weather as well? It's possible your gas cap vent is clogged you could check that pretty easily...

My 2009 does the same thing in hot and cold weather. I usually let it sit outside until it cools and then put it in the garage.

Yeah, it doesn't have to be hot outside for it to do it.

Sorry can't help you with fuel venting prob, but want to welcome you to Vacaville. I've lived here for quite sometime, motorcycle rider paradise with the great year round riding weather and wealth of cool place's to ride. I'm in the process of purchasing a 2009 XB1200XT. I wanted a Uly the from the get go, but having to deal with HD with another bike(also have a 2002 RK which I love) wasn't in the cards, so I bought a Klr 650 for the back roads, but never could get the Uly out of my system, so did the only logical thing, found a nice low mileage red one and made an offer, and if all goes well will be getting sometime this week.

The comfort kit seals in the old under seat side vents so the hot air does not hit your legs and the back of the fan so that it does not heat up the space under the seat. It works and is worth the money.

The ECM flash will make the fan run all the time over 12-15mph. You will find it hard to notice and the extra forced air over the engine DOES make it run cooler. The flash may also have some other map upgrades. The fan control is normal otherwise. If the bike is to hot at any point it will run to control this even with the key removed. Make sure your oil cooler is working as well. Very importent on a air/oil cooled engine and something I found did not work right on my 06 bike.

Fuel boiling. My 06 bike would run very hot and on very hot days you could not touch the part of the frame with the fuel in. Never had a problem though.

Vapour comes off gas all the time even at very low temps and needs to escape. The vapour is more dangerous than the gas and compressed vapour is VERY, VERY dangerous.

If you look closely, at the end of that little pipe you should see a haze almost all of the time. If you have pressure while taking off the fuel cap thats not right. That thing on the tank is the vent but it may be a valve and faulty IE sticking. I do not know if some bikes have extra emission controls for fuel vapour as some cars do in some states.
