Hey Guys,

So after a dilemma last season of frying my VR, and dealing with massive voltage drops, it's time for me to re-approach my electrical situation. I'll admit, I don't know a whole lot about electronics, and your help will be much appreciated!

So first off, I'm in need of a new battery.
I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions aside form the one that American Sport Bike sells. Perhaps something with a higher capacity / better life? Is there an advantage to this?

Next up, I'm thinking I need to do something about my HID lights. I had them wired in directly to the stock wiring, and I feel that this initial voltage suck when starting the bike could have been causing me some problems.

Since I also have a GPS, and am planning on adding heated grips and some external chargers for other items, I'm thinking I'll add a fusebox from Eastern Beaver, but I'll admit, their selection of products is a little overwhelming. Not sure how many Amps I'd need going to the fusebox. I think they make a 20A and a 50A, but how do you choose?

I know they sell a relay kit for H7 lights that you can connect.. I figured this route adds some safety, but what about a startup delay. Should I also add this into the mix?

I was also going to order the heated grip kit from American Sport Bike, and wire it into the switch pod, but since my bike is an 06, I was also going to add the heated grip relay kit from Eastern Beaver as well.

I'd really appreciate it if you guys could help me piece together the components I'll need. Thanks so much!

First thing to do with your '06 is fix your 77-connector with the factory fix or suitable alternative, if not done already.

I like Deka/East Penn's ETX-14 AGM, reasonably priced and sold under several different names:

For far better control of your charging over the stock VR you may be interested in this:

All my completely subjective opinion (mostly), YMMV.

"I'm in need of a new battery." I changed my 06 battery for a new OEM one and still had the slow turn over problem. You get used to it. Charge the battery and check it after a day. It may do down a bit to maybe 11.5v but it should start the bike if the bike has no other problems. Below 11.1v the ECM will have a problem. A bigger CCR battery is better if you need a new one or want to pay the price. The OEM AGM HD battery is good quality.

The HID lights are not a problem to the bikes electrical system in itself.

I fitted Oxford heated grips to my 06 bike and they worked great. They may have been ok on a run but in town they took a lot out of the battery. In fact enough to cause a problem starting the bike.

You can add as big a fuse box as you like but it will make no difference. The problem is that the charging system is marginal. That and the fact that all big V-Twins need huge power to start, kills the battery charge so needs time to re-charge. If you then start to use heated gear it can then cause a problem.

You can find 220 CCA replacement batteries (I believe I got mine from carquest). This battery works drastically better for me than the 200 CCA oem and aftermarket replacements I've tried.

I have a voltage gauge on mine, and with a heated jacket, heated grips, GPS, 55w HID low beam, and numerous extra LED's (tail lights and marker lights), I've never seen it go out of the green, even in city driving. Add in the fan running, and the 55w High beam or 70w fog lights and it doesn't like city riding though.

(FWIW, mine's an 09, and is slightly different)

Just a thought (and becuase I did it and like the heck out of it), the switch pod on the right/throttle side WITH the heated grip switch is available from American Sport Bike for around $40 IIRC. I bought it, wired my aftermarket grip heaters in to the OEM switch gear and now it looks like my '07 had factory grip heaters.
