Anyone ever tried dissecting/salvaging a cooling fan?

Yes. Got it apart but couldn't find a replacement motor of the right voltage, size, rpm, or shaft diameter.

Thanks. Does it have ball bearings or brushing? Did you destroy it getting it apart?

It has bearings and is sealed at assembly. I didn't even try to take it apart because I could smell that electrical meltdown smell.

Here is the fan analysis I made several years ago.

Husky, very impressive report. You seem to be the one to ask, was there ever any upgrades, after the first year, or do we all have that same fan.

The original fan on my '08 was part #Y0050.02A8A. The replacement fan was #Y0050.02A8A-REV.D. They look identical but hopefully has some internal upgrade.

I don't know of any upgrades being made. I didn't even know they released revision letters to the basic part number.

I haven't heard of fan problems in a few years, except for an occasional pre 08 bike having one, so I suspect Buell implemented some changes. I have 22800 miles on my 08 XT and that's with the fan running continuously at speeds over 15 MPH.

I don't consider failure of a fan caused by engine oil leaks to be a fan problem.
