So, on my way to Equador from Colombia I seem to have blown a front fork seal. Fortunately there is a harley dealer in Quito. But I think the chances of them having a seal in stock are slim.

Are there any other seals that can be used in the front forks?? Or am I stuck trying to find a HD part??

I know, I know.....I should have brought a spare set but I didn't.

Cheers.

Heya Kevin,

I had the same problem in Venezuela.
Apparently there is quite a bit of overlap with the original Showa seals (for an equal mm fork). However I haven't been able to find a replacement yet. I ended up trying to get a set shipped out to me from the US, but Brazil customs tried to shake me down to retrieve them. I refused to pay the fee and they 'destroyed them.' Yah, right!
Once you leave Columbia things get much more third world . . . till you reach Chile.

If you really want to fix them, then I would suggest getting a set sent down to a dealer/friend from the US. Make sure that who ever sends them lists them with the proper value and includes the invoice, so customs isn't up your @$$. At least in Brazil, the limit is much lower than the value of all the seals and gaskets. Check the limit in whatever country your in. As you've seen, Harley in SA is like Maserati in the US (or Canada?); Freakin' awesome to ride around on, and then you need some random part and your screwed.
(Parenthetically, I've needed to sort out a broken starter clutch. Instead of being able to just open the starter up and change that the piece, I have to buy a complete new starter. Price in Brazil? USD $1,400!!!! Cost US? $110 . I'm having to try customs again. And this time I'll pay the damn fee.)

Anyhow, I'm just cranking up compression and rebound on the fork, wrapping the leaking side with a rag and riding it out to Argentina. Honestly, with the load, the roads, and all the stuff to take in, I can't even tell the difference.

Hope you're loving the vibes.

DB

Thanks for the heads up DB. It's Sunday so I can't do anything about it today anyway. I don't really feel that much difference apart from the oil leaking all over the brakes/wheel. I'll try the dealer tomorrow and keep my fingers crossed in the meantime.

Amazing ride from Colombia to Equador BTW. And yes loving the vibes.
