I've been a fan of Buell bikes ever since the tuber days and this Sunday I picked up an 08 12X with 13.5K miles on it.

Haven't had much of a chance to ride it, but I've already started undoing some of the previous owners not so nice mods.

The PO shortened the side stand. Is it possible to get a standard length locking side stand?

The front brakes are pulsing. I'm going to try and sand down the rotor but am I also thinking of purchasing another rotor if that doesn't work. I see on American Sportbike that there are numerous rotors for sale. Is anyone less prone to warping/pulsing?

What are the footpeg options? The PO inserted screws into all the footpegs to improve grip. They feel awful, like someone inserted screws into the pegs. :P

What is a good site to purchase discounted OEM parts on online? I would like to get a flyscreen, airbox cover, and beak.

Thanks,
Hugh

Roam,
Welcome aboard. Usually all you need to do is ask here and somebody will step forward with parts they have removed and are just sitting on. I wouldn't be at all surprised for a few ULY owners to answer your request for each of those parts you want. Most just want a fair price and shipping. I just sold a rear wheel to a fellow ULY owner this past week. I didn't need it as a basement tripping hazard and a ULY rider here wanted it. Sold.

I have not messed with a kickstand yet, but for other components I've sent the most business to:

A.S.B.
http://www.americansportbike.com/

Knight Design
http://www.knightdesignllc.com/

Precision Engineering
http://www.preeng.com/

and also just keep an eye out on the classifieds here on BadWeb or post that you are looking for specific components.

Have fun.

Welcome Hugh. This is a great site to get lots of important information about your new bike.
The pulsating front brakes are common. From what I've read here, the best option is to go to the EBR site and get that big rotor. I just put one on this winter so can't make any claims yet, but others here can.
The short kickstand is probably due to the PO lowering the bike at some point. Perhaps they raised it back to normal before they sold it, making it seem shorter now. I may be interested in taking that kickstand off your hands if you get rid of it.
Also I am now the proud owner of a set of tour tech foot pegs and the precision engineering pegs. I was going to use a set on the passenger pegs, but that won't work due to the little clicker that holds the OEM pegs up. Anyways, what I'm getting at is, I'm going to test ride these in the spring and decide on one set or the other. I'll be selling one of the sets then. Both are good options for footpegs. Maybe just remove the screws the PO put in the stockers. You might like them that way. Stay in touch.

Just remove the screws from the footpegs and enjoy you new light-weight racing pegs.

I don't know of a place you can really get discounted OEM stuff. There used to be a dealer in Chicago that sold stuff cheap online, but I think they must have gotten their hand slapped or been acquired by someone else because I don't think they sell any longer. It took 7 months for my part to come in the one time I used them, though, and I hear a lot of stories like that. I wouldn't have used them again anyway.

I find I'm often surprised when I walk up to the parts counter at my local pirate-lifestyle dealership and order Buell parts. I'm lucky in that the parts guys there know how to find them, where to find them and, more often than not, I'm surprised by the relatively low cost for the part. I'm not saying that ALL parts are low cost but compared with some other, more commonly found bikes I've owned (and some very common cars also), the parts counter retail prices don't hurt like trying to buy parts for things that speak German, Italian or English with a funny accent (not Canadian or Newfie, in case you were wondering).

Buying from American Sport Bike has the added-value experience of being able to get answers to questions of the highest order (things more important than politics, religion or philosophy...how to keep a Buell alive).

Don't forget www.EBRacing.com : )

I highly recommend their brake rotor kit (the 6mm is awesome), as well as the updated rotor mounting hardware.

Bodywork is going to be tough - it's pretty much gone as far as new stuff goes, so if you find one you like...jump on it and piece a set together. Ditto on the sidestand...and if you get a complete assembly with bracket (remember, the Ulysses X is DIFFERENT than any other Buell so don't just buy an XB stand), use grade 8 bolts and LOCTITE to attach it to the motorcycle.

Welcome to the madness! : )

Welcome and enjoy the bike!

A service manual is one of the best investments you'll likely make if for nothing but peace of mind.

Many of the common issues with these bikes are simple to diagnose and uncomplicated to fix. By 2008, a lot of the bugs had been worked out with the Uly. The search feature on badweb reveals a collective wealth of knowledge, and the people on BB and D are a resourceful and often entertaining bunch.

Enjoy your new addition and here's to many miles of smiles!

Roam. If you have the silver pegs they are not great and are VERY slippery if wet. The black ones seem to work much better or at least thats what I found as I have had both types.

I have also had a set of TourTech pegs which I do not think they make/sell anymore. They have a very pointy surface and are a "off road" peg. I found, on the road that I had to lift my boot off the peg to re-position my foot because they dig into the boot soul. It depends on how you ride the bike but I find the black Buell ones fine. The silver ones are, IMO crap and close to dangerous in the wet.

Pulsing front rotor. Buell had this system that the brake pads would coat the rotor to give better braking. A great idea that did not work as it used to put an uneven coating on the rotor thus causing the pulsing. Its been dropped on the later bikes. If its got that bad you may need to replace the rotor but if the rotor is ok then clean it off and replace the pads with something like EBC or SBS which are MUCH, MUCH better. Also if your back brake is no good just change out the pads as this is all that is needed. There is nothing wrong with the brakes on this bike that a good set of pads will not fix or at least thats what I found on mine.

Uly man, do you know when they quit using this? Does my 08 XT have the bad brakes? So far, it does not seem to pulsate bad, maybe just a bit though, not very noticeable yet. Thanks.

I do not recall the date but the OEM pads on even my 2010 Uly are not that great and all cost way to much. But this not uncommon from OEM anyway and many change pads to suit what they want.

If after pad change the pulsing is still there, get the EBR set of nuts blots and washers, it cured my friends pulsing, and it's not been the only one.

Electraglider,

It works for me here at work using chrome for a browser. When you click on a section it does take awhile for the page to come up.

Thanks for the welcome. The bike currently has lyndall gold pads. The pulsing is very bad. I guess I'll try some other pads and the mounting hardware from EBR before purchasing a rotor.

Played hookie from work today to was the beast and take it for a spin.

Roam-

Congrats on the bike.

I would recommend you bite the bullet and get new pads, hardware, AND EBR rotor. Any 'scrubbing' of the deposits on the rotor is a temporary fix, at best. I have EBC HH pads and the 6mm rotor from EBR. It rules. And has for roughly 7k.
