I got a set of journeymen racks and need the hardware list for the six bolts that hold side racks on the Uly. What size and grade. And any other hints on installing the rack. Thanks again. | ||

The only tip I can give you is keep all the bolts loose until you have them all started,it might take a bit of moving around to line them all up. | ||

For these bolts that screw into aluminum I doubt a grade eight is needed. I believe mine are a grade five. Leave all of the bolts loose including the cross loop tie bar. Start them all evenly by hand. If you need to start them with a wrench, put a little more effort into lining them up with an awl or pry bar, they can cross thread easily. I would test fit and tighten all of the bolts once before putting any thread locker on. These frames can be a bit of a wrestling match because of the tail parts/seat frame being bolted together can make a little bit of difference between bikes. | ||

The Harley dealer wanted $92 bucks for those bolts when I was in the same place. Ace can help you more goooder. Try to get hex when hex called for. | ||

I was in a similar boat, the dealer was adding them to the order, the total was about $40 before he said "Wtf $40 and thats not even all of them?" He then printed out the instructions and highlighted the bolts, told me to bring that to a hardware store. I believe it cost me just over a dollar for everything. | ||

I hung the racks on with regular hex bolts and lock washers grade 8 looks like it will work. I might try washerbolts later, I could not find any 5/8 inch long ones so took an inch and cut it. Thanks again Froggy for the list o bolts. | ||

"Grade" is strictly a rating for tensile strength. A 3/8-16 x 3/4 bolt is identical from grade 5 to grade 8, the only difference is the breaking strength of the material its made from. These are saddlebags. You don't have to have 105,000 lb tensile strength (grade 5) to hold them up. But the tradeoff is, graded hardware is generally more corrosion resistant due to coatings and heat treatments. I tend to use at least Gr5, just because of the coatings. If you can find an e-coated or powdercoated bolt, go with it as opposed to a plain uncoated steel bolt. Ratbuell the grade 8 bolts I used are coated thats the main reason I got em the 5's were not coated I was trying to find a bolt with a washer as part of the head and coated, most the hard bolts I ran into were coated black except the ones I needed. 105,000 lbs I can hook up a camper now rite? |
