Anyone have any luck on finding a code, spray bomb or touch up color that matches the fast orange Ulysses plastic? Any ideas? I want to paint a few things to bolt on.

There's a Ford color that's not far off. Grabber Orange?

Isn't hugger a chevy color. Do a search here you may find the thread that mentions if I remember correctly it being a ford mustang orange.

Grabber Orange from ford is a close match, U3 color code.

Not familiar with Hugger Orange (Chevy), should be WA523F code though.

Could take some plastics to a competent paint shop, and have them mix you some, many can even put it into a spray can for you.

Many larger paint/body shops have sensors that can "read" the color and calculate a paint mix that matches.

Get Vern (etenully) to chime in here. He's done a number of bag panels and stuff for folks. He's a painter, too (explains SOOO much..lol)

Bought some of this in fall, tested it but haven't used it yet. It is actually a really close match. You can get it on line, but I actually found it at Hobby Lobby (beware of the blue hair and beehives). I believe etenully sent me down this path.

Since there is no paint code, I would recommend starting with the 2006 or 07 Ford color. It is pretty close. Use that formula and tint it to match.

The first time I mixed it from scratch I found it took many attempts and about six base colors. A difficult color to match in part because the plastics have a natural translucent quality that must be over come.

By the way, that's a Testors product, you can't see that on the label.

No that was probably Ratbuell. I am satisfied with their color being close enough, but this paint is for model cars and trains, it is not a very durable coating for use on a real vehicle in outside conditions.

When built up enough for good coverage it will scratch and chip fairly easily. Maybe it would work as a base with a Urethane clear coat for durability and UV protection. I don't know for sure, as I use real automotive paints.

I had painted mine a few years earlier than Joe did his. When he was here last I swapped with him because the Testors paint was failing with chips scratches and fade. As far as I know the set of bag covers that I originally painted on my bike in early '07 are still looking good on Joe's Uly.

When I prepped for repainting the Testors covers, the paint easily scratched off with a razor scraper, even though he had properly scuffed and cleaned them before painting.

So what's the paint code, or closest thing to it for the blue plastics on our Uly's? Sorry, I had to ask.

Same issue, there is no color code to match. You have to find something close and tint to match.

None of the Buell parts were painted except maybe for the muffler. Either color molded plastic or powder coat.

Is there any place on line where to order some graphite gray paint for the bike?

Plastikote T-29 School Bus Yellow might be close, at least the cap looks very close in person, haven't tried it yet. Etennuly is correct, I tried the Grabber Orange model paint on my chin spoiler, didn't last a week.

"Anyone have any luck on finding a code, spray bomb or touch up color that matches the fast orange Ulysses plastic? Any ideas? I want to paint a few things to bolt on." Bolt on parts are fine but forget it on plastics for the most part. Its very expensive and does not work all that well. It also can crack and peal in time.

It may not have been noticed and I have never seen a post on it but the plastics on this bike fade to a lighter shade. You will need to go to a good paint shop with a sample and they will use a optical scanner to make a paint match. It is not a perfect science and you may find the colour is miss matched over time. Even today the red band with paints is a problem. It might be better to stick with the frame colour if you can. And no there is no colour code for the plastics.

Yep, the Testors was probably my fault : ) It does match pretty well - at least, as far as "bag panels compared to a tank cover two feet away" matching goes.

I *think* Vern's bag panels still look good...but the damn bike is too dirty to tell lol. Freakin' road salt...

Now, my bag panels definitely peeled from clumsy feet and bad prep. My CeeBailey's windshield, though, is still holding up pretty well (I painted the black base section orange to look like the stocker). There are some bug nicks just like on a car, but no huge gaping holes (and I don't typically kick that part of the motorcycle, so I'm sure that helps).

Local auto paint supply shop will try to match and sell me a spray bomb $25. I am shooting it on bolt on stuff not the Uly plastic. If it is a gloss enamel it should harden up enough I hope. I might try a small can to shoot in my small gun. I will let you know how it turns. Thanks..

This is what happened to my '06 Uly after several hours of color mixing and tint matching.

Many of the brands of 2K urethane automotive paints curve, or change a bit as they dry. That complicates color matching due to the time it takes for each alteration to dry enough to show its actual final color. Force drying in itself will change it differently. Then often clear coat will change the effect or look of the color just a small amount.

An experienced painter's eye with natural sunlight is a hundred times better than any of those electronic color readers.

Another complication to matching the plastics of the Uly is that the plastic has a bit of a translucent effect. If you were to slice out a two mill thick shaving of the plastic, the thickness of paint, you would be able to see through it.

In a finite way, that actually gives the plastics a depth of color that is difficult to duplicate exactly. The paint's color must trick the eye to make it look the same.

I have done the orange, red, and blue Uly colors. Each has the same complications.

The plastics can be painted with the proper techniques, adhesion promoters and flex agents once the color is right, to where it will not peel, crack, scratch or fade. It can be an expensive process if you want it done correctly.

I still have my Madstad that Vern painted for me. I'm going to put it on my new black uly along with one of two orange seats I kept just to see what the combo looks like.

Verns paint jobs are pro all the way.
