My Buell Ulysses 1.1.12

I decided to upgrade my '06 Ulysses. Upgraded the front and rear bearings, Ducati mirrors, tail tidy, new blinkers, powder coated the seat grab rails and tail light area, powder coated the wheels, pin striped the wheels, painted the plastics, new belt, new cables, all new fluids, new fork seals, removed the charcoal can, all new vent tubes, wrapped the pipes and a new Jardine exhaust. I am still waiting on a new low seat that I purchased off of flea-bay to finish up the bike. That Jardine is LOUD as heck. It is much more tame sounding with the billet baffle installed in the tip. I like the loudness when riding solo. I could use some help here in San Diego with tuning the moto with ECM Spy. I have never used it and would love some help getting rid of the popping on decel. Still a stock ECU, but the prior owner modified the air intake some to let in more air. Any help would be appreciated. I have the cable but have not downloaded the ECM Spy program.

Thanks all.

Two suggestions either a EBR ECM or get someone to burn a race ECM, The ECM can learn but not so much, urgent race maps.

Likely Ski means the reflector strips on the wheels. I'd looked@those online. How do they hold up? PITA installing?
Like the concept, How is the execution..?

Bruce,
I would love to hear about some of these new back roads I haven't seen! You were right the photo was taken near Campo on highway 94. By the way those are not reflect ur strips. I have the same person who painted my bike pinstripe my wheels. I like the way it turned out. I thought about using those decals I found online. I was just worried that they were going to be too wide. I wanted a thin, clean line.

Palomar Mtn, West&East Grade, Hwy 78, S.D. Wild Animal park to Borrego turn off, Road from Ranchita down to Borrego Springs, Mind the Drop, Highland Valley rd., Rancho Bernardo to Ramona, Kitchen Creek rd, mixed surface, climbs into Laguna the back way, Lyons Valley rd, hwy 94 to I-8, Old Highway 80, of course, Hwy 94... Will have to think awhile, but try connecting Any of these = Fun Ride!
Have Lived off of most of those...
Love knarly Commutes!

Hey, jonsocal, how do you like the helmet you have.
Do you have any bad turbulence wearing it?

Merc- I really like the helmet. For the money it is great. Very light and comfortable but the convex shield takes a tad of getting used to. The buffeting from the peak (visor) can be felt far more than a helmet that does not have one. That being said, I live on the west coast. When I leave in the morning, I head east towards the sun. When I drive west in the afternoon on the way form a long ride, I get the sun again. The visor helps with that too much for me to worry about the buffeting. Crosswinds can pull your head to the side a little bit. But again that depends on how much you are willing to tolerate.

Skifast- I sensed sarcasm, but wasn't completely sure. (..friggin smartasses...!) What you see in your photo is a reflection from the beautiful Southern California sunshine.

RCF2/Ian - Thanks! I am very happy with the result. I had some cheezy flames on the bike the first time. This is much better.

As for more photos, I can do that. I am a tad bashful as my new seat hasn't arrived yet. The old seat I converted to a black suede and has discolored from all the riding. The tail tidy is a real piece of work. (Thanks Jim Marten of Marten's Motos in Santee.) It is a custom fabrication job. I'll take photos of that too as he did a heck of a job.

Jonsocal,
I notice that your profile shows that your ULY is a 1996. You'd of thought that Buell would have gotten further with the ULY design by the time I got my 2006 model.

If the bikes running right IE idle, no flat spots and throttle control is right a little popping is prob ok.

If it is banging loud like a back fire you may need to re-fuel the engine. Get the ECM SPY prog and check the timing first. I find an open airbox is ok with the std ECM and a K&N type filter. The trick is to make sure the bike runs right before anything else is done to it.

I will bust out the camera tonight to take some photos and post them. As for my profile, I have made the necessary changes! (Took 10 years off of my bike!) Originally it was a barricade orange bike as most of you know about the 2006 models. I finally decided to make the necessary changes and personalize it. I still have a question to those that run Jardine exhaust systems. I am experiencing the popping on decel. I emailed EBR and they are stating that I can purchase a Race ECM from them and it should knock back the popping but not completely because this is one of the characteristics of the Jardine exhaust. Is that true? Can I adjust the settings on the ECM with ECM Spy or do I have to spend the $300+ on a new Race ECM to knock back the popping?

Still Unfinished. Need air cover paint and seat.

OK here are some photos of the bike while it was being worked on. I will try to get more photos of it tonight to show the powdercoating and tail tidy.

If you look closely I also had the passenger grab rails powdercoated in the semi flat black which is the same as the wheels. The next thing will be to powdercoat the clutch and timing covers to the same color and finish as the wheels. That will probably have to wait until I need to take a look at the clutch. At this point I think I have just over 30K miles on the clock. In fact, I am going to jump on her in just a minute to meet my buddy at the SDSU men's basketball game!

Tail tidy of 2006 Ulysses. This was custom fabricated by Jim Marten of Marten's Motos in El Cajon. If you want the same I am sure that I can get him to make a few more, though I am not sure of the cost at this point. I can find out if necessary.

Someone asked to get a better shot of the powder coated wheels. Please bear with me, I used my camera phone and compressed the photos to get them added to this site. I am not sure how to get these onto this site using a higher resolution as of yet. Probably with some type of photo share. I just don't want to pay for that service. If you want any detailed photos, shoot me a PM and I can send you an uncompressed photo.

This is the tail tidy that I had fabricated by Jim Marten of Marten's Motos in El Cajon, Ca. If you or someone you know wants one made up, I am sure that I can get him to fabricate others.

Jonsocal. If you go to the ECM-SPY site you can email them your questions. ECM-SPY was developed by Gunter and Nick, amongst others and are the best people to ask about its use. Or you can use UKBEG. A lead is about $30 and the software is/was free for the 06 bikes. Post 06 bikes the lead is the same but you pay a fee to a charity for the software. Get the 06 lead and software anyway as its handy to have for TPS resets and other things. You can turn the can motor off with it and thats enough to pay for the lead alone. These are what I used it for with my 06 bike.

The 06 bike uses DTFI-2. The later bikes use DTFI-3 which is much better. More power, faster, more functions and gets better right up to the last 2010 version.

I find the number one thing to do first is to make sure the bike runs right, and it should in std factory setup. This cuts out any problems that can happen with the bike such as Grounding faults. And if you have not done it yet clean off the paint on the sub frame battery Earth point. It is a know build fault on the 06 bikes, in the HD list and cures many of the bikes running gremlins. Check your timing is perfect as well. Again you can use ECM-SPY to do this. You can then use ECM-SPY to adjust the fueling of the engine with the setup you have but be warned it possible to damage the engine if you are not sure of what you are doing. Just go to there web site and read through the tuning page to see what I mean. Fuel injection today is well understood but is not a simple task. Its close to a science in its own right and has taken many, many years to perfect and they still have problems now. Not just Buells but many other bikes as well. Even the much vaunted BMWs have had some problems.

A popping engine can be a sign that it is running lean and this can make the engine run hotter. The 06 bikes run VERY hot anyway so its best not to make it any worse.

Its a great bike but does needs some insite, effort and love to get the best from it.
