Ok I'm thinking an adventure bike is in my future and I like the Buell platform to start based on reliability and maintenance issues. I currently have an STT and love the hell out of it but it's pretty much a preservable/rideable example that I'm not so sure I want to thrash on cr@ppy roads.

So I'm thinking Uly or sniping another STT or an Ss and fitting Hepco Becker side racks (providing they're still available) and Pelican cases and a Ventura rack for the back.

My question for those who may be able to compare is: what would I be giving up in "off pavement" capability with an STT or Ss verses the X/XT. Knowing in reality "off pavement" would be most likely cr@ppy secondary roads and such, not woods/mountain riding.

Thanks for your thoughts

In way of answering just the question you pose: the XT and the 2006-2007 XB12Ss have the lowest suspension(~4.5 inch travel), the STT and 2008-on XB12Ss have almost an inch more clearance and travel(~5.7 inches), and the XB12X has an inch more still (6.7 inches of travel).
you're trading up in the size of boulders and potholes you can plow.

There was a thread somewhere here'bouts by a fellow who has pictures of his White STT in high places. Something I am planning to do with the '09Ss I just bought...

hope you find the one that fits, and Happy New Year

No.
Just get armor for the STT, same thing as XT I believe, Suspension&Wheelbase wise.
The side racks&hard bags Really help, picking it up When your bike takes a nap!
Ride with Friends, wouldn't want to find you next Spring!
Try to get a Uly X length rear shock&forks if you Really like it...
But the Uly is an All-Road bike, use it for what it is.
Only offroad with care, single track is begging for problems, unless a Really talented experienced Dirt rider...
And even then, You'll nap, hopefully Not under the bike. sux that.
Enjoy the bike you have.

If this will help you;
The side bag frames fit the X, XT, and XP.
The X and XP had the heavy duty wheels, taller suspension, and more ground clearance.

Hepco-Becker makes side racks that fit the Lightning bikes. Char (Whatever) has a set on her bike and is very happy with them. They are a HB part, not a Buell part, so you'll need to find a HB dealer to get them from.

They require the removal of the passenger pegs and mounts, and I'm not sure if they work on the long wheelbase tail.

Ulysses racks will NOT work with a lightning tail section.

Thanks for the info on the rack fitment Dragon & Rat I think I have my head around those issues. Rat, those HB racks you linked I have found spec'd for the Ss and STT. If you dig through the English section of the instructions it says for 2007- long tail but the bike in the pics sure looks like and S or SCG to me.

Bern and Bruce thanks for the insight on suspension and ground clearance, helpful stuff that.

Uly side racks can be made to work on a Lightning if you can find a set.
