Two notable items for me at the Long Beach motorcycle show:
Triumph 1200 Explorer. For me this is the closest yet to a worthy Uly replacement. Sits good. Seat is longer than the Multistrada, narrower than the Uly at the front- I can get the balls of both feet on the ground easily. Not quite on the Uly with its 100k suspension (beaten almost to submission by my fat ass).
Doesn't really feel any heavier, but feels bigger due to frame mounted screen/lights/assorted paraphernalia sticking out front. The Uly just feels so right in that department. Minimalist.
Looks downright slim from behind. Stock rack and ready to use luggage attach points are a plus.
Standard ABS, Traction Control and Cruise Control. Very 21st Century-ish.
5.3 gallons of fuel, but probably less MPG than the Uly, so range is probably similar. Not sure if it requires premium fuel.
Single sided swing arm and shaft. Definitely heavier than the Uly, but hopefully maintenance free.
Liquid cooling system and valve adjustments. Radiator looks kinda vulnerable. Advantage Uly.
Overall I'm favorably impressed. I'd really have liked to see the Moto Guzzi Stelvio but they were a no-show.
EBR 1190RS. They had one there (no official EBR presence) to sit on and drool over. While I couldn't ride one (can't do the extreme sportbike crouch) and sure couldn't afford one it was awesome to see the superb engineering/fit/finish and feel the incredible lightness. What a machine! Can't wait to see what's coming next from Erik.

Did you happen to catch Doug Wothke's (RTWDoug from ADVRider) presentation about his ride across Russia (Road of Bones) on a custom Sportster? He transformed a 1200XL to a "Dirtster" with long suspension, crash bars, knobbies, etc. The dude's thread is amazing, and he's done other crazy world trips on old bikes.

Thanks very much for your impressions. I'm still seriously interested in the Ex; since I'm not sure the Multistrada 1200S and I will have renewed our marriage vows next year.

Although I'm seriously tempted to wait a few more years and see what materializes from EB...

Dr greg,
Just wait it out. I personally am not lusting after any bike other than really wanting an electric bike for tooling around town on. If the EB.R AX becomes a reality then I'll surely be very very interested. I only hope it doesn't become some over complicated monstrosity because of all the bells and whistles that other manufacturers are putting on their bikes these days. And I certainly don't want it to be another BMW lookalike. Hoping that it will be lighter by far than anything else available.

Well, the years are flying by, and I don't have a lot more time to wait (especially with my crash history). I'll be retiring from my professor job next May and becoming a part-time consultant (more time to ride!)

I'm not worried about complexity (obviously, with owning a Multistrada 1200S), but I agree that a little lighter bike would be nice. I'd be happy with an HONEST 500-lb weight ready to ride.

Actually I've been recently inspired to write an open letter to EBR about what I'd love to see in such a bike. When I do, I'll post it here for the world to see.
