The Harley glass mat battery, which usually go 4-5 years for me, is only two years old and I fully charged it before installation two years ago. After filling up I hit the starter and it did nothing for a couple seconds, like it wasn't going to start. I hit it again and it fired up. It was only 2 miles to home and when I got there I shut it off, waited 10-15 seconds and it fired right up. It has stuttered 'a bit' occasionally but not as much as today. I put it on the battery tender and it was fully charged quickly. I had been using electric gear up until the gas station but rpm's were up so draw down, if any, should have been low. Just a Uly 'thing' or something bigger? Thanks. (Message edited by buellerxt on December 08, 2011) |

Air cooled v-twin. Has its quirks. Sounds like you are making something over nothing. |

Not sure what you mean by "It has stuttered 'a bit' occasionally". Are you saying that it has done this before? Please clarify. Just because a battery can charge doesn't always mean that it is working properly. You should test it to make sure all is good. Also check the simple stuff like making sure the terminals are tight and the grounds are clean and tight (though I'm sure you have already.) Depending what you mean by "stuttering", there are other things that can cause the issue like the switch itself or the starter, but I agree that it is probably nothing. |

What it does, Buewulf, and only occasionally but it did it yesterday, is 'delay' for a second or two when I hit the starter, as if it isn't going to start, but then it does. I checked the terminals when I got home and they were tight. It may be nothing and just a Uly thing. I haven't had it on my other bikes. I'll ride on, Man. Thanks. |

It can be hard for the starter to push through the compression stroke if that happens to be where the piston is when starting. It also needs a second or two on my bike sometimes to muster up the will to make that initial push. That is probably all it is. |

Buellerxt, my bike does exactly the same thing. It is an 08 XT, just as yours is. I have gone through all the grounds, connections etc. too. I have trained myself to just keep holding the button in and it will pause for just a second and then fire up and run great. Since it only does it once in a great while, I do not lose any sleep over it. Thanks. (Message edited by motorbike on December 09, 2011) |

I've had the same issue but only seems to happen when the bike is warm. |

Hey, great input, Buewulf, and thanks for adding your experiences, Motorbike and Badrap. Much appreciated. I'll join each of you, who I've seen at various times say it, 'Is this an AWESOME bike or what!' |

My 2008 has always cranked slowly. I had the battery tested in a few different ways in different shops and it checked out good. Checked all of the grounds and they were clean and tight. My issue is still in the unresolved category. |

I dare you to time it. I bet it isn't a second or two but is more like a half a second. |

I'd NEVER take that 'dare'! |

The only time my '06 hasn't done a hesitation at initial cranking is when I have a brand new fully charged battery in it. Then it will spin over like you would think it should for a month or so. Then it is back to the normal hard cranking first stroke and fire off immediately there after. If the bike sits for a month or so without running or being on a tender, it will always start, but it will sometimes wipe out the memory for the clock and tripometers. |

"I have trained myself to just keep holding the button in and it will pause for just a second an then fire up and run great. Since it only does it once in a great while, I do not lose any sleep over it." Same here. Both the X and the XT do this so I've just accepted it as one of the Uly quirks. Just a thang. |
