At 47,959 miles.
HOLY CRAP!! I was accelerating away from a light and the collapse happened just as I was shifting gears. I thought something really serious had gone wrong.

Fortunately I was only about 10 miles from home. There was no warning, no increase in vibes, just BAM!. Shaking like I'd broken something important. Pulled over to the side of the road and noticed that the engine was idling just fine. Only the usual noises. With no puddle of oil on the ground I started to pull away from the side and the violent vibes returned. Coasted over again and inspected the belt, rear axle, and both wheels. Everything looked OK and I restarted. I noticed that when I revved the engine, the engine sounded fine but the bike shook terribly. That's when I took a look at the motor mount. Complete isolator failure.

Naturally this was after the local shop could put in an order today. The vibes are bearable below 2k rpm and above 3.5k. Anywhere in-between and it is immediately hand numbing.

RRRRRR

Wow, that is some scary stuff. Bummer about the timing (end of day, holiday weekend, etc.), but glad you and the bike faired ok.

Keep us posted on the timeliness of getting it fixed.

Local shop said the their computer showed the mount was "available" and in the warehouse. Expected arrival is next Wednesday or Thursday. Replacement looks pretty straightforward.

Check Al at American Sport Bike for a new isolator.

If it is in stock Joanne will get it shipped that day.......

I definitely go with American Sport Bike for anything my local shop does not have, or cannot easily get. When possible, I like to buy local. They've even started to give me a discount.

I have replaced my front isolator at about every 8,000 to 9,000 miles. I am a bit overloaded two up and my feeble ole cannister is sensitive enough to vibrations that I can feel as it starts to fail.

I have seen several folks run them to complete failure like yours. Did you not feel it change before it gave up?

The web will crack and start to loose its dampening ability. I can feel more vibrations well before complete failure.

I did not notice any changes. As a rider of mostly vintage bikes, I'm usually pretty attentive to such things.

It probably did not help that three days prior I was riding for the Arizona Ironman. I carried a cameraman throughout the event. The bicycle leg is probably not stressful for the bike, but on the run leg I have to maintain 8.5 to 9 mph when we were pacing runners.

This is the third Ironman for the Uly. Maybe that type of running, two-up, was too much.

I'm going to take a careful look at the motor mount components and see if there is not some way to retrofit the bracket with an isolator from some other type of equipment. It's not important now, but in a few years it may become so.

Noticed new vibration yesterday.

I wrapped up my latest maintenance project, replacing the rocker gaskets. Rear rocker cover was leaking oil. This requires engine rotation, which of course requires removing the front isolator and re-installing.

After putting it all back together I took it for a test ride and noticed a vibration in the seat and footpegs. I'm pretty sure it's new, but it's also possible that I noticed it because I was sensitive to any changes after performing such maintenance.

Anyway, a quick forum search points to the front isolator and a simple inspection shows cracks in the rubber wings. It might be age (2009 XT with 39K miles) or it cracked during removal and installation. Ordered new one from Al (americansportbike.com) and will see if it smooths out.

Hm.

Guess that's something I should check, given 27k miles on the clock. Wasn't sure if I was noticing "more" vibrations lately, or if I was just getting used to the CR (which I've been riding more and more recently).

Any photos of the failed mounts? Photos of "good" mounts? I know what to look for...but a "good" vs. "bad" photo might help gauge the "how bad" level...

These are of one of the front isolators that I replaced. Sitting static the engine mount bolt still was hanging in or near center as it should. This mount on my '06 had about 9000 miles on it with a lot of two up duty at over 600 pounds with gear and full bags.

It would go a lot further before complete failure, but my feet, hands, and back are sensitive to vibes, so I change them when I feel the increased vibrations.

Two views of a collapsed motor mount. There should be a space between the engine-side casting and the frame-side mushroom bolt.
