Hey, anyone try one of these air filters instead of a K&N? If you have, did you like it better than the K&N?

I never used one on a street bike. Very commonly used on MX bikes during my racing years (70s & 80).

The filters would get caked with dirt on the outside but would be clean on the inside. They worked very well. I did not know they made filters for street bike applications. I would have purchased one in lieu of the K&N that I currently have.

I have heard from a few sources that they flow worse than the paper or K&N.
Perhaps a good idea to put one in if you're going to do the ALCAN or some dusty crappy stuff.

I've been using one on my uly for two yrs. They're nice cause you can clean and reuse them. I've now gone back to the stock paper though cause I have a translucent air filter cover and white looks better under glass. I might be willing to sell it and the cleaning/oiling fluids if someone is interested.

I'm still using and cleaning my original OEM filter after about 35,000 miles.

I use one in my TL and in the dirt bikes. I think oiled foam flows better than paper and stops dirt much better than oiled gauze. Note that the foam does break down after a couple of years. I'd recommend replacing it every 2-3 years. It is critical to use proper filter oil, motor oil won't stop the dirt so well.

I have one on in my uly, I know they're the only way to go on a dirt bike. I'm not sure there's an advantage on a street bike and don't really care. I always have filter oil around because I have dirt bikes. I can see no way they could flow less than a k&n.

I run the K&N on the Uly but have used the foam ones on my dirt bikes for years. As mentioned you need to change them after a few years. I pulled my trials bike out of the basement after many years of storage, and checked the air filter. It had turned to dust and had to be vacuumed out of the intake! I put a new one on and it fired in three kicks. I swear you can't kill an old Yamaha!

I would think with the paper you could blow it out from inside out with one of those cans of compressed air you use for cleaning computers. Then maybe lightly vacuum the outside.
Got my UNI filter today. It looks good. Will have to wait till muffler comes in.

Buellhusker,
First remove the air filter and repeatedly turn and tap the filter on the garage floor, turn and tap, turn and tap, and this will knock out a much of the loose dirt that the filter kept from getting sucked in your ULY engine. After that I just apply liquid dishwashing type soap across each air filter pleat and then run warm water through the filter from the inside outward to expel the filth out the way it was trying to come in. Then I just centrifugally fling the water out best I can and then hang it up to dry overnight in the shower so that it can drip dry. Don't use compressed air on the air filter media as it will certainly blow a hole through it. Those OEM Buell filters are tough and don't worry about it getting wet because when you ride in the rain it surely gets wet and then just dries out after the rain stops. No sense in replacing these durable and expensive filters when they can be washed over and over. Works for me. And my 2006 bike has been about as reliable a ULY as can be found.
Oh yeah, and if you are concerned that it isn't as bright white as a new filter then you might use a liquid stain remover instead of the cheaper dishwashing soap. I've done that and it seems to bleach out the dirt stain quite well but I doubt the filter is really any cleaner that just using regular liquid soap. But I might be wrong.
