I just got a new to me 2009 XB12X with 5k miles. I rode it home from the dealer 150 miles (50-65 degrees), and rode it again today for 20 miles (75 degrees). I have yet to hear the fan that everyone complains about. Should I be concerned?

Let it sit and idle for ten minutes. If the fan doesn't come on then, or immediately after turning it off...it's time for a fan.

Depending on what version of the programming your bikes computer has, it may or may not be tied in with the vehicles speed. If you have the newer programming, the fan is unlikely to come on under 15mph, and will next to never come on after turning the motor off. If you have older programming, your fan is only controlled by the head temperature sensor, and will only come on between specific temperatures.

Either way, you should of noticed it by now.

Check your fan fuse, if it is blown I would start cleaning ALL your grounds....

Thanks for the welcome and the advice. I just checked the fuse and it's good.

But I'm not sure what kind of programming I have, how would I know that?

I'll do the ten minute idle test tomorrow. I'm also planning on changing the oil, since it's 5000 mark.

If you get ECMSpy (and the cable), you can turn the fan on and off manually from a laptop for testing.

Good news.

I changed my oil today, then let it idle for a 5-10 minutes, and the fan kicked on. So it's obviously working, I just never heard it with my helmet on, and it never has run after shutting off the bike. And it's not nearly as embarrassing or annoying as I was lead to believe by all the negative reviews.

I'm loving this bike. Dropping it off on my way out of town tomorrow am for new scorpion trail tires and a professional recolor on the plastics. (blue currently, will be black ). I'll be back in town Friday to pick her up and praying for good riding weather Saturday : )

I here Black is the slowest of the colors, Yellow is fastest followed slightly by the blue. : )
