My Uly exhibits a squeak that is most pronounced when it's: -cold, engine that is, not ambient temps) -louder on acceleration -diminished on deceleration -coming from the right side of the bike I replaced the wheel bearing, despite the old bearings feeling fine. I also replaced the idler pulley bearings too. Neither bearing replacement resolved the squeaking. I did a search of the message board and saw that belts sometimes squeak too. Is there anything that I may have overlooked that could cause this squeaking? what sayeth you all? Any help is appreciated. | ||

I would look at your belt for any strange wear patterns. If it's stretching more on one side it might pull to one side causing the noise. Also look for an alignment issue. Make sure your axle is not getting loose. Make sure your pinch bolt didn't fall out. I've never experienced this on the Uly but have on a Harley and it was a rock rubbing the side of the belt but the Uly really doesn't have a place that could happen like the Harley does. | ||

Did you check the bearing in the belt tensioner? | ||

Busykat, One of two things or a combination of both could account for the squeak. 1) Maybe you are so cheap that you squeak. 2) You are getting up there in years so it might be your knees. | ||

If your belt is dusty or wet, I can make all kinds of squeeking noises. | ||

Craig, Yes to both, but it's a different kind of squeak then those two examples.  | ||

Spray everything that doesn't touch the road w/WD40. More reasonably: spray one thing at a time then ride. You should be able to isolate the source of the squeak in this fashion. Chris C | ||

Is it road speed dependent or rpm dependent? Evident in multiple gears? Can you influence it by dragging the brakes, turning, bouncing up and down in the seat? Do you have the Hepco-Becker top box and if so put a few duct tape patches over the latch and see if it changes. The bag latch to the bracket, not the box lid latch. My latch squeaked shortly before failing and allowing the box to fall off. | ||

My belt looked perfectly normal, so I checked and adjusted EVERYTHING else. Even replaced the rear wheel bearings (which appeared to be in perfect condition) I finally swapped back to my original belt (kept as a spare) and the squeaking went away. | ||

"Is it road speed dependent or rpm dependent?" Nope, it just get's higher pitched and more frequent with higher road speed. "Evident in multiple gears?" Yes, gear choice doesn't affect it. "Can you influence it by dragging the brakes, turning, bouncing up and down in the seat?" Tried those with no change. It only changes with acceleration and decel. It's louder on acceleration, and lessens on deceleration. I haven't a H-B top box, however, I'll ride it without the boxes to see if that changes anything. The WD-40 idea Britchri10 gave is a good idea, (why didn't I think of that). I'll try that too and later, I plan to run it on the lift to see if I can narrow it down. |
