Went for a ride over lunch - the check engine light came on.
I didn't really notice anything wrong with the way it was running.

Dropped the bike off at home and took the car back to work. When I got home, I read the code - 21. I did the test and yep, my exhaust gizmo failed. Looks from the pics on the site here that mine was one of the older ones (bike is a 2008.)

I ordered a new one - anyone know if this is a backordered part?

No idea on the backorder, but mine went at 50 miles on my '08 Uly XT. I ended up needing a new exhaust and ECM as well. No problems since in the 20K miles I've enjoyed on my Uly.

50 miles? Yikes.
I'm just under 18,000 on mine.

Exhaust actuator? Is that the butterfly underneath the airbox? I have a drummer exhaust. Would it go bad if it were not "in use"?

The actuator is the motor that opens / closes the valve in the exhaust, located on top of the airbox on my bike. I know the Drummer does not use the exhaust valve, but I would assume your actuator is still hooked up to prevent throwing a trouble code. Either that, or you have some type of emulator to trick the computer into thinking the actuator is still there.

Yep. From what I've read on here, the original ones had plastic gears inside that break, melt, or seize up. The bike can be ridden safely w/o it, but it will leave the CEL lit until you fix it. The 06-07 bikes can be overriden using ecmspy, if you have an aftermarket exhaust. Not sure if that can be done on the 08-up bikes. In any case, I ordered the part. It's close to the end of riding season here in MN, but I'd like to get it swapped out before I put the bike away.
