right hand injury at work leaves me unable to ride for maybe up to a year. what do you all recommend for fuel stabilizer. i won't be able to do much more then add something to the fuel and oil. | ||

Sorry to hear that Larry. I think the generally recommended procedure would be to add the recommended dosage of fuel stabilizer (I've never heard anything bad about Stabil) and then fill the tank completely full. It would also be a good idea to change the oil and primary fluid as well so the engine is stored with fresh oil. It wouldn't hurt to shoot some oil down the plug holes either. Hang in there... | ||

Yup. Stabil seems to work pretty well. Run it for a few minutes to get it into the injector as well. Marvel Mystery oil in the plug holes and you're good. It's good to put it up on stands if you have them, and also good to take the battery out or put it on a trickle charger. | ||

If it's going to be a whole year, wouldn't it be better to drain the tank out? Would that do something bad to the pump and stuff? | ||

FILL the tank. Air does more damage than liquid. Tank parts are designed to be submerged, keep them that way. No corrosion, no drying out, no varnishing. Stabilizer will keep the fuel combustible. Fill it to the brim, add the stabil, run it thru the injectors as noted. Park on carpet if you can't put on stands. Battery indoors, climate controlled, on a tender. That should do ya. Oh, and listen to your PT's regarding your hand. It's gonna hurt like hell, but they'll make sure you get as much use back as possible. Good luck! | ||

If it is going to be over a year that you are going to park it in a garage corner with a cover over it or a shed or even a corner of the living room, I find it is a good idea to write what you did to 'preserve' it on a card, with the date, and hang it where it will be noticed before start up. | ||

+1 on the Stabil products. Just fired up a pushmower that had not been cranked in nearly two years. Fired up on the first yank of the cord. If you are lucky enough to live in an area where ethanol is not added to fuel, that is a big plus. Go out of your way to get some. Make sure you run the engine a bit so that the stabilized fuel displaces the old fuel throughout the fuel delivery system. Fresh oil is also a good idea for the amount of time it will be sitting up. And move it every now and then so you don't develop flat spots on the tires. Perhaps that's not a problem with tires anymore, but just as a precaution. Sorry to hear about your hand. And, sorry, but I have to ask with you being a marine biologist and all: shark bite?  OK, so really I just wanted a good excuse to use that emoticon. | ||

Stabil is good stuff but if you've got ethonal fuel add that blue stuff (I've forgotten the name, but they have it at my local moto dealer - stihl shops usually have it too) to keep it from getting wonky. Really seems to make a difference. I'd def change the oil in both holes as well if at all possible. I would fill the fuel tank all the way up as well, else you'll get condensation inside there. You may want to bring the battery in the house and toss it on a tender. They seem to last best when kept at a constant temp and tended. You might also wipe down as many metal surfaces (except brakes of course!) as you can with WD40 or some sort of oil to keep corrosion at bay (not an issue if you live in a really dry climate - but I think I saw ref to FL. Stable makes a blue one that is marked marine and for ethanol fuel. There are 2 doses on the bottle for amounts. Short term storage (which is what I use all year) and long term storage. but I am switching to Star-Bright star tron this year, it does ethanol a little different then stabul. Either the blue Stabil or Star-tron (also blue stuff). S100 makes a corrosion protection spray that works well when putting a bike away for storage. | ||

thanks for all the info guys.i think i'll do the blue stabil treatment on a full tank. the bike sits in the garage already on carpet. i have about 1500 miles on my last oil and tranny change. i'll probably do that in a couple of months and have the wife help out, it would be a good learning experience for her, and i'll be a bit more healed by then. yes it is a shark bite. we were attempting to sedate one of our 8' 280# sandtiger sharks from the aquarium. i had already injected it twice but it still didn't go down "deep enough" so a third injection was called for. when i injected it the third time using a 5'pvc pipe that is tipped with a dart it came around faster than i have seen anthing move. i guess i threw my right hand up to protect my face. it grabbed my hand and crunched down on it twice. i removed it when it opened it's mouth a bit for the third crunch using my left hand. i got about 12 stiches on my left hand, right is in a splint with just my finger tips sticking out. luckily i didn't lose any fingers. the surgeon that worked on me is a hand and plastic surgeon. took him 4 hrs to basicially take the top off my hand and reattach some tendons and stuff. my wife pulled some strings and got him to work on me, shes a nurse. I spent 5 days in the hosp. was going stir and got them to release me. i'm home now and on heavy iv antibiotics for the next 6-8 wks. can't do much for sure. thanks for the info guys, this is a great site. and yeah, i got lots of i'll ride it for you offers from neighbors and coworkers. | ||

Ouch! Worked at Sea World SD when they had their 1st "Shark Ark", picked them up at the airport, helped putting them in the tank, nice&snoozy from hyper-oxygenated water... Had to "swim" them to get them into gear. Was Great fun, but teeth were in the back of the mind. Worked Sport Fishing charters for years afterward, dealt with/dodged many sharks, saw a few people get bit, They Can Move FAST! Never can count on them Not reacting, even if on deck for a longtime... Saw an Angel shark snap@movement after 2hrs on deck! I used to cut the jaw hinges if it was a keeper for meat, tie'em on the swim step if client wanted "jaws" mount. Very Carefully! Good Surgeons can do Amazing repairs when they have something to Work with. Lucky You!  Heal Well! Sounds like an Excellent Life, the Uly will wait for Ya. b. | ||

Towpro - that starbrite enzyme stuff is what i've used and my local shop (very good place) recommends. I used it in combination with stabil and the fuel seemed to keep and not get too nasty in the desert race bike (living on the east coast it doesn't get frequent use  ) | ||

Hey Sharkguy - GEEZ! - sorry about your hand. Yep, they move at the speed of light - as you well know! I was salmon fishing a few years ago & caught a small 2' long "dog fish" (AKA - Shark) I was attempting to release him and got nailed on the palm of my hand - luckly only a glancing blow - but 7 stitches nonetheless. Cant imagine an 8' shark chomping on me! As for fuel: if you could find some non-ethanol gas (Avgas ?)to top off tank, and use star-tron - you should be good to go. I used star-tron in my pressure washer that got un-used for 2 years - started right up. good stuff. | ||

eg, yep thats him! toothy grin eh. Etennuly, i think my dreams of concert pianist and hand model have been smashed.  i do have a friend who is willing to bring over some race gas i'll have to talk more with him to find out what that is. Brucespoint, it's a small world. i helped collect many of the sharks that went out to SD, all of them that went to sea world orlando. worked out of a place sea world owned on long key, fl. would have been 1977 or so. | ||

78 was when I was@seaworld for the opening of the 1st Big Tank. Yup, Lotta Cute lil Bonnethead's & such, some Large fellahs too! Small World is Spot On!  SeaWorld was my 1st job out of the Coast Guard, just after doing Deep Freeze 77 down south... Met the people setting up the Penguin House... They were down in Antartica doing captures at the same time. Travel&Talking w/people Shrinks the World really Fast. How are your thumb&wrist? They are the key to workin out function, ie Riding... Determination is what seals it though. Have many a friend who have comeback to riding after rough injuries before Microsurgery was worked out, have a Nurse sister who did it for years, Great Stuff, has Saved a LOT of appendages! b. p.s. Had a good friend whack off 2 fingers in a cabinet making shop, just a kerf & some feeling missing after reattached... Who then went on to getting stuck in the wrist with a Barb of a 200lb Bat Ray, Quite a Trick being as where they are located... (beer)... Bp, i have pretty good motion w/ the thumb.my hand is in a splint up to the elbow, so don't know how much movement there. radial artery got cut, repaired, middle finger tendon cut in 3 places. he had to open up my arm a bit to find that end of it to reattach. i get this splint thing removed on tues and start pt(hopefully) yeah rays are scary, the barbs do lots of damage, then there's the venom and risk of infection. look what happened to steve irwin...messing w/ crocs and venomous snakes all his life...taken out by a ray. | ||
