So I have finally gone and done it......

Leave of absence until may next year. Heading for South America next week! I have a few things still to get for the Uly 2010 wheel being high on the list if I can find one in stock.

I also was thinking about a racing ECM. The bike runs well on the highway but is a bit rough at low rpms. Is the race ECM the way to go for a 2006 Uly??

Anybody got some suggestions for spares?

My Stator has just been done. I have a spare VR. Rear bearings are new. But I may go with the new wheel anyway. Clutch cable is fraying, but I have a new one on order.

I think I have most of my bases covered, but it is always good to get some more opinions.

I'll be heading south from BC Canada. Stopping for a week or so in Palm Springs. to take care of some maintenance. Before crossing into Mexico.

Can't wait to get on the road!

Awesome! I hope I can do the same someday.

The 2010 wheel is an excellent idea.

I highly recommend either relocating the ECM or shoring it up somehow. Here's a thread on it that may give you an idea...

I might add a spark plug wire or two to my bag of spares. They tend to chafe against the frame and will cause problems in wet conditions.

Seconds on moving that brain, Kevin.

My Uly started stuttering while crossing Venezuela. May have been all that great free (!!) gas. But I moved the brain and all has been well. Also had some wires up near the head coming loose. Tying them up helped things.

Keep in touch and let us all know how things develop.
Folks here will be a great help. This community really is a great source of support and information.

Sounds like a great adventure. You should post pics or maybe start a blog we can keep up with so we can enjoy it as well. Good luck and be safe. Look forward to hearing about whats going on with you and your travels.

May be a minor pain in the butt now, but securing the fuel pump wires before they chafe through and leave you stranded is something I would recommend.

Plug wires are an easy add on to spares. I was thinkin about doing the fuel pump wires. I should have the time and it doesn't involve waiting for parts so thats a bonus.

Maybe bring an ECMSpy cable as well. Won't take up much space, and would let you test quite a bit without much effort. You can borrow a laptop anywhere, but the cable would be hard to scare up.

I be bringing my netbook with Ecm spy installed. Not so sure how to use it! But at least I can do so of the basics on there. The net book is smaller than the service manual. So,if I can find a PDF copy of the manual it's makes a lot of sense to bring it instead.

Has anybody found a PDF copy of the 06 Uly service manual?

The closest I have found so far is the 07 for $4.95, which is as far as I know, more or less the same. Lower seat, progressive front springs...anything else?

Here's the link if anybody is interested

http://buell.servicemanualvault.com/2007-buell-uly sses-xb12x.html

If there are any major differences I can just scan those pages from my 06 manual.

Choose your route carefully while going through Mexico. I have some adventure touring friends who are from Mexico who wouldn't do that right now. You might get more adventure than you bargained for. Anyway good luck and have fun.

I have thought about the situation in Mexico right now and have been checking travel blogs frequently, to see how others are doing eg....

Horizons Unlimited Motorcycle Travellers Ezine, for all the latest news from Travellers around the world, from Antarctica to Zanzibar!

88th Edition, September 2011
"Honestly, we started to doubt whether we should go south into Mexico after all the warnings! Someone really asked us whether we would carry a gun on the bikes, and if not, we should definitely not drive into 'scary Mexico'! The prediction by most people was that we would be shot, raped, murdered and robbed within the first week. Now that we are in Mexico for just over six weeks, I think we owe the Mexican people, country and wonderful hospitality this story; this country is great and the people are even better! To whomever is in doubt: get your ass on the bike and drive up here!"

Daan Stehouwer and Mirjam van Immerzeel, Netherlands, in Mexico

Of course, thats just one travellers POV and it's probably hard to write a negative post once you have been kidnapped, raped and murdered!!But, I have been trying to make this trip happen for years. It's time to make it happen.

Check with Al at American Sportbikes. When I did my Southwest trip 6 weeks or so ago, I was able to get a 2010 wheel for my '07 Uly without any problems since he had them in stock (and he'll press in the bearings for an extra couple of bucks).

Have fun and be safe!

Sounds like an awesome trip! Do take notes and pictures and write up a nice ride report for us when you get back (or as you go along). Lots of info on advrider.com if you need anything specific to riding though SA.

I rode all over baja last summer despite folks saying not to. Absolutely no problems or even hints of problems. Very chill, I'm sure I'm in more danger every day in the states from crime. US news is all about hype and getting viewers/clicks, best I can tell it has minimal, if any, relationship to what's actually going on in the world.

Have fun on the trip! If it were me I'd carry a spare belt, be sure to re-mount the ECM so the seat doesn't break it, fix up the wires, make sure the clutch cable retainer is the newer style one, fresh clutch and throttle cables, fix any other known issues you can think of, that sort of thing. I'd secure a spare throttle body and fuel pump and leave them with a friend who could send them express mail to you if needed. If you have time you might even get one of Tootal's TB shafts and install that to lessen the chance of it breaking on your trip.
