I just bought my uylesses xt and now L have a 1000 mile ride to get it home, just wondering how often I'll be stopping for gas.

Better figure 45 MPG. Any more and you'll be glad.
Ive gotten a little better but thats a conservative average.
Ive never gotten the numbers some guys get no matter what I ride or drive .
I do weigh more than average at 225lbs but I think its my style thats the difference.
My bike runs great and always asks for more throttle.
When the gas light comes on, I haven't gone more than 30 miles before filling up. Ride safe

I get 45 too.
When it was new, it was worse. In the thirties.

Took a while to loosen up.

45 seems about right. That is what our X is still getting. The XT's MPGs shot up when it neared 20K on the odometer.
The XT will see 60+ mpg when we are flogging it on the superslab.
Seems to get better gas mileage in the summer. It loves the non-oxy petrol I give it when I am in MN. Runs better and improved MPG's too!

How often you stop for fuel will depend on your cruising speed. This last weekend I rode my XT from Maryland to Houston TX, where I am visiting my son. I got as high as 45 MPG and as low as 35. Rolling down 20,59 and 10 where traffic was cruising at 80 +/- my fuel light was coming on in the 125 mile range.

I averaged 49.7mpg riding from Boston to DC when I brought my Uly home. All stock except for an Erik Buell Racing ECM. Had all the bags fitted and an over-size windscreen.

FWIW it takes less energy to punch a hole in thin air so you'll always get better mpg at high density altitudes (i.e., in the summer and on top of mountains).

I san usually run about 145 miles between fuel stops. My last 800 mile trip I averaged 44MPG at 80MPH on the interstate. '09 XP with 9500 miles.

My low has been about 40 mpg, the high 51. For some reason it seems to get the best mileage when beating the snot out of it in the twisties, the worst when superslabbing it in bad weather. A three thousand mile trip averaged 46.5 last year.

I'm seeing about 41 mpg regularly. I stop for gas station when I see 120 on the odometer; another 10-15 miles after that and I'm into reserve.
Of course, I'm a solid 250lb. without gear, so I'm sure that contributes to my relatively lower mpg.

For reference, I have about 13,500 miles on the clock.

41 to 55 mpg observed on my 07 uly... about 3mpg less on the 9sx. I would almost always average 42 mpg pre accident, post accident I now almost always average 45 mpg.

The change was a result of a deliberate decision to try and get better fuel economy (its fun to stick it to the man), my suspicion that my crank on my 2007 uly ain't what it should be, and the perspective on life that doing a stoppie into the side of a Corolla gives you. (It is ***really*** worth not being in any kind of hurry at all when you ride, if you are late you are late, and no margin is too big a margin to keep in order to accommodate other drivers stupidity).

I agree with Tiltcylinder, my bike got 50.5 mpg during the WV Buell Rally. Third and fourth gear twisties. Go figure.

My mileage has ranged between a worst of 38 mpg (trying to keep up with an SV1000) to a best of 51 mpg. I average mid forties 90% of the time. 2006 XB12X.

I've also read some anecdotal stuff about not running too far into reserve because the "wet" fuel pump needs to be immersed to stay cool and not burn out. Not sure how common this problem is but I have read some cases where it happened.

My 08XT gets about 45 mpg. I start looking for gas when hitting 150 miles. The light normally comes on at 160 ish. That is for highway with some side roads to and from the office. I have gotten as low as 35 but that was in heavy stop and go traffic.

I have never seen that as the cause of a fuel pump failure myself. But it could have happened.

I frequently run my '06 long into the low fuel light, to where it takes 4.2 gallons. Or there is .2 gallon left. I have only run out twice, both times coasting to within a block of a gas station.

My '06 averages 49-50 mpg. The worst I usually do is running above 90 mph for a tank on a superslab. That put me down to 40 mpg once.

My mileage was noticeably better after the 20k mile mark. I was FULLY loaded on my trip in August, and no matter the speed or terrain I was getting 50-55 mpg. New it was in the 30's, then from about the 2k mile mark till close to 20k miles, it was in the mid 40's.

Just filled up my first tank of all-commuting (11 miles each way, about 2/3rds city, 1/3rd freeway) = 38.7mpg. On the same commute my wife's monster does 57-60mpg.

Typically on my 06 X with all three bags, I get between 38-42.

If I'm gentle, it can jump way higher than that. Following a friend home from NJMP in his motorhome, at 60mph...I got darn near 60mpg.

But I don't normally travel that close to the speed limit ; )

Those bags make for a LOT of airframe drag. I've noted better MPG on back roads, even though I'm flogging it, than I do on the slab. Lower speeds mean less wind drag means better MPG. I used to pull my side bags off sometimes; that was always good for 3mpg with no other changes.

The fuel pumps have been known to blow fuses if you're stuck in heavy traffic with very low fuel. The "dead pump" syndrome was earlier bikes, where the wires could chafe on the frame from a batch of badly routed harnesses.

I get a solid 43 miles per gallon. (of course I am twisting the wick ALL the time). I love the corners, and am constantly lifting the wheel in 2nd. What a great bike. I have noticed a rough idle lately, must be time for new plugs. I am 15,000 with no issues to speak of. Just normal maintenance. I can not wait for Erik to build his next version of the "uly". if the price is around $20,000, I'd have one in my garage. (just sayin, they built on hell of a bike)!

City riding (Phoenix), stop and go short trips to school and back, with a top case and longboard parasail. I get about 36mpg. I can get a bit over 40 when I'm doing highway stuff, and a little bit more if I'm trying to get good mileage.

The big bore kit doesn't help the mileage, but I don't ride for the gas mileage!

How big of a big bore are you running DV? Do you have a thread on the results somewhere? I'd be interested to hear more!

Mileage matters quite a bit to me due to the Buell's pitifully-small fuel capacity. Not worried about the expense, but better mileage = more range : D

+1. I hate stopping for gas. How far a bike can go without stopping for fuel is an important consideration for me. I prefer to be able to go at least 200 miles before I need to fill up. The Uly falls short in that regard, but it is on the frayed edge of acceptable range.

Small fuel tanks have become the norm with manufacturers it seems, particularly with the types of motorcycles I want to buy.

I'd like to see what you could do on a BMW F800S, Froggy. I recently rented one of those when I went to visit my brother in Salt Lake City. Mixed mountain blasting and highway superslabbing and I averaged 61 mpg over 5 days. That is the best I have ever done on any bike of any displacement, and I was
't even trying.

What can I do besides lose 50 lbs to get better than 45 MPG? I feel like Im riding like a chicken most of the time. I have an 06 Uly. Curious how mileage can differ so much (25% or more). Dont doubt it just wondering how I can get me some.

I suspect that type of riding, temp and altitude play the biggest part. Seems it does pretty well droning along at more or less constant speed for an extended period of time in warm weather. Short stop and go trips in cool weather kill the mileage. Tight, non-flappy riding gear should reduce air drag somewhat as should leaving the bags at home if you don't need them. Make sure the tires are fully inflated as well.

Beyond that you can try re-mapping. Bikes often have rich spots as well as lean spots in the stock mapping. Dialing it in just right will typically give better mileage.
