I am looking at selling my 87 FXR and picking up a Uly. I have a few questions first. Pre 08 models have a narrow steering lock angle of 54 degrees. Is this like other Harley external steering stops, could it be widened by grinding the stop back? What does the Eric Buell ECM do for the Uly? Is it required when adding an aftermarket exhaust? More questions to follow. Thanks in advance for the help.

1. No, the fork would hit the frame if you ground down the steering stop. The limited steering angle is an issue for tight off road or turning around inside a garage etc., not noticeable for regular riding around on the street.

2. It has E B R's "race" map, in theory smoother and maybe a bit more power on a stock bike.

3. Only if you want the bike to run well. Note that you need to specify the exhaust you are running when you order the E B R ECM. Some folks run aftermarket exhaust on stock mapping. Most report that it runs less well than stock or at best no better than stock. Some get lucky. To get the most out of the bike you really need a fuel map tailored to your exhaust setup.

1) You can use hardware from the '08+ models to improve the steering lock on the '06-'07 models. There are many posts on what you need and how to do it, and those that do the mod rave about it.

2) There is an Eric Buell Racing ECM that I understand works wonders (by most accounts) to the '08+ bikes and does well for older bikes with aftermarket exhausts. ECMs on pre-08 bikes can be manipulated fairly easily with the right software.

3) I run the stock exhaust, so I don't have any input on this. All I can say is that a remap makes the stock bike much better, so you would likely want it for an aftermarket unit even if you think it runs as well as stock.

Note on the steering upgrade you need to swap out the entire front fork assy if you don't want to add about a half-inch of additional fork offset (which is a huge geometry change - some riders report not minding how the bike handles with the additional offset, others have reported problems). Personally I ride fairly hard in the turns and wouldn't swap just the clamps.

Just did the triple tree only swap, and I love it. picked up a set off e-bay for 89 bucks. tight turns much better and did not notice any adverse effects on the road.

Ok, every one talks marvels over Erik Buell Racing ECM's, well i don't deny it may work wonders for some people, but in my case i didn't notice any improvement, but that is due because a friend with the maps AL (American Sport Bike) sold me and a bit of magic, and fine tuning runs better than with Erik Buell Racing ECM, so my guess is most people that got the Erik Buell Racing ECM never had well tuned their ECM.

Got an 06 that handles great, of course I started on cruisers, got an X1, then the Uly so comparatively, the Uly is great compared to a cruiser.
