Was riding home from the barber yesterday and the engine lite came on and the bike quit ['06 Uly 35k]. Got a ride home, came back, cranked it and it started right up. It had been running a little rougher than normal down low on r's [below 3k] for awhile and had a couple stutters on the interstate last weekend, right after low fuel lite came on. When I rode it around after this incident it actually ran better than it has for a while [smoother below 3k]. I'm going to replace the fan....it sounds like bearings going out and has made other odd sounds. Any ideas?

I really doubt the fan has to do with the engine running troubles.

Make sure the ECM isn't cracked.

Make sure your battery is in tight too.
The computer does freaky stuff when it doesn't get a nice ground.

I had a faulty BAS that had caused my bike to shut down on the highway once. Coasted to the side and it started right back up. Also had some cutting out / studdering in the days before, but I can't say it was rougher than normal before the replacement.

The grounds and ECM are more likely candidates, but the BAS is something else to consider if the ground / ECM inspection doesn't yield anything. I'll be checking my grounds this weekend, too as I experienced a few hiccups at speed on the past few rides.

My fan has had a horrid sound like a bearing is going down since about 7k miles (now 17k). Still functions properly.

Relays. They crap out on our bikes, and knot cost about $4 each. Cheap fix/insurance. My ignition one went bad, and it would just shut the bike down. It would fire back up again and run just fine, sometimes right away....sometimes an hour later.

Andy, are those relays generic? Can you just walk into an auto parts place or do you need to go to the pirate store?

You could ride up to NAPA, pull one of those relays out and bring it to the parts counter. Chances are they have a Bosch version of it. Doubt it would be $4 though.

Yeah, I would bet that a NAPA would have one....there's really nothing magical about relays. Just gotta find one that fits. For $4, I just ordered them from HD.
