Time for a tire change. Could someone tell me the easiest way to remove the front wheel with removing only what's necessary. I only have an auto scissor jack for lifting the bike which worked fine for the rear as I had the front chocked at the time but the rear will not fit in the chock so I'm not sure how to stabilize the bike when lifting the front.
Thanks for the help.

To stabilize the rear, get a pipe or steel rod that will fit through the hollow portion of the rear axle. Support the pipe/rod with a couple of jack stands, cinder blocks, or whatever similar stuff you've got lying around.

Remove the front fender. Loosen the axle clamp bolts on the left fork leg. Loosen the axle (LEFT HAND THREADS; RIGHTY = LOOSEY). Remove the axle. Carefully push the wheel back and lift enough for the caliper to clear the disk. Rotate the right fork leg counter-clockwise as viewed from above to get the caliper clear of the brake disk and wheel. Pull the wheel out the front.

Installation is reverse order.

Option 2 is spread caliper open (pop the master cylinder reservoir cap, unbolt the caliper, wedge it sideways against the rotor to spread the pads), remove the pads, remove the caliper, remove the axle, remove the wheel. Good excuse to check those brake pads...just remember to work that lever a couple times BEFORE you ride with that new front tire on!

The stock brake line on my '08 is not long enough to allow the caliper to clear the mounting ears. Nearly though.

I find that I can easily remove either wheel using the sidestand and a scissor jack. Front installation is a bit cumbersome due to needing to match the wheel to the bike's lean angle. Takes a little patience..

If you put the scissor jack on the front jacking point of the muffler with the bike on the side stand you will lift the front wheel off the ground. If you want more security strap the jack to the bike in some way to keep it from slipping off. I've done it.

On my '09 XT I removed the axle and caliper and the wheel came right out with the fender in place. There's an arrow right on the fork leg to make sure you don't forget the threads are backwards.

I hoisted mine up with a ratchet strap to the garage door opener bracket.

Thanks for the help. New tire should be in later this week. The stock Pirelli went for 8,400.
And Bike pilot, I was wondering, if my garage door brackets could hold the weight of the bike. At the very least I plan on using them to keep the bike from falling over.

I did the garage door brackets also on my first tire job on the bike. If you can hang from them and jolt around it will probably be fine.

The most recent I removed the muffler and used a $70 motorcycle jack from harbor freight. By far the most stable way to do it. (four ratchet straps to the jack and you can roll the bike around completely off the ground).

Well the new tire is on. I went with a Shinko 011 Verge. I'm running a Raven on the back. We will see how it holds up. Thanks for the help!
