After the fuel pump died on my 08 Uly in Missoula, I was ready to give up on the whole Buell thing and move to, I dunno, an S10 or something. Didn't help that I had to stay in a hotel, fly home, fly back out to get it, etc. Pain in the arse. Anyway, I flew back out on Friday (yesterday)to retrieve it. Well, I took a bit of a detour, so in two days put almost exactly 700 miles on it. It ran perfectly. It was a delight. I'm back in love. I just hope she's faithful this time.

I would like to express my appreciation and endorsement of Montana Harley Davidson/Buell/(and Ducati?) in Missoula. From the time they sent a truck up to get me, until I picked up the bike, they were professional, communicative, and very helpful. While it's true it took them awhile to figure out the problem, they fixed it. Not only that, but they did not charge me for the 100 mile round trip to pick up the bike from the middle of nowhere, they did not charge me for the new ECM because they couldn't be certain that was the problem, and get this, when the fuell pump failed, the bike had 3/4 of a tank of gas, and when I picked it up, it had 3/4 of a tank. This means that the captured all the fuel that they had to drain to pull the pump, and *put it back in*. I was shocked.

So, if you're going to break down on your Buell somewhere in Montana, I suggest closer to Montana HD/Buell/(Ducati? Really?) would be a good idea.

Cheers,

Ski

Great story... a great dealer can make all the difference sometimes.

Hopefully they had a little chat with your bike and convinced her not to fail you again!

SFB, thanks for letting us know your giving the Buell another chance. And what's wrong with HD/Duc? Both air cooled twins in somewhat v configuration.

A few years ago, my 2 brothers and I were rolling through Missoula, when one of them got a flat on I-90. He had (for reasons unknown to me) had a tube put into the rear (otherwise tubeless) tire of his ElectraGlide. I knew that the HD dealership wasn't far, and let us to it. They found that the valve stem from the previously tubeless tire had been left in the tire (but obviously pushed into the rim) when the tube was installed, leaving a perfect imprint on the blown tube. They made a Xerox copy of the tube, and faxed it to the dealership (Mile High Harley, Aurora, CO,) and got them to pay for the shop time and new tire (mounted without a tube, duh.) we were in & out in a few shot hours, too, and on our merry way to Flathead Lake. Long way of saying that I've seen them take care of folks traveling through, too.

I should also mention that Mike in service said that he had two other Buells in for fuel pump replacement. Apparently, Missoula is half way to lots of places for people so a lot of bikes come through there, and since the next nearest HD shop is God knows where, and the next closest Buell shop even God doesn't know, they get a lot of work from travelers. Interesting on the fuel pumps though, mine failed in extremely hot weather. Do we need to start a failed fuel pump thread?

Nah...

Well, Ski, you are pro now with Ulys...can't afford to switch brands and go through all that again (like a new wife!). Missoula HD still has that beautiful BUELL sign on the building. And Ducati. Go figure!

Man I hope to be posting a very similar story soon! Mines down (albeit here at home, at my local dealership) and I am also contemplating giving it up (For the same bike! The S10 is calling my name!).

I need to get it back and begin to have some good luck on it SOON! I cannot afford a new bike right now.

This story gives me hope! Thanks!

200 miles today on perhaps the last day it won't be pissing rain here until July. Grinned ear to ear the whole time.

I do like this bike.

It appears that my kudos were premature. I took off the seat today to move some stuff around and found that when they replaced the ECM, they failed to include the front bolt and spacer block. So the ECM's bolted on with just the rear bolt. I seem to recall that getting the front bolt on with the comfort kit is a bit of a hassle.

Damnit

There have been several folks here that have moved the ecm to a safer place. Might want to search out one of their threads or maybe they will pop up here and let you know. The forward bolt is a PITA!

Speaking of rides, I just returned from riding back roads, mostly gravel and one dirt road, with some adv boys. I think there was about 15 of us. Put 175 miles on this morning and me and my black Uly are looking a little gray!! Gravel dust everywhere! Ok, enough of this, I need a shower! Glad you're back in the saddle Ski!

On the relocate...my thoughts exactly. In fact, I did that today. I have questions, but I'm going to jump over to the ECM relocation thread for that. Might as well keep it in one place.
