Have to replace my '07 XB12X ECM and will replace with a ECM from a '07 XB12R both with the same part number of Y0152.3A8. Should I just us ECMSPY to rewrite the new ECM with my ULY backup file? Or would the XB12Rs ECM be the same?

The programming should be identical on both, assuming neither were fooled around with. Just use ECMspy to TPS reset.

About a month ago I found a great condition used ECM and swapped it on my '07 Uly.

First, using ECMspy, I fetched and saved the eeprom data from the old ECM before I removed it from the bike. Then I then installed the replacement ecm and fetched and saved it's eeprom under a name like "newecm" (just for backup). I then burned the old eeprom to the replacement ECM. Finally, I did the TPS reset. It was a pretty easy procedure, took about 10 minutes.

I did that because I wasn't sure if my replacement ECM was "fooled around with" like Froggy said.

I had a programmer for my diesel truck. Super simple.
I wish our bikes where that easy. Is the ECM spy
intuitive or take lots of study that hurts your eyes before hand.
Im better at diving in and figuring things out along the way.
(read the guy can read but not instructions the first time anyway)
And can you really foul things up if your not careful.
Im tempted to see FiremanJim.

ECMspy is a tool much like a hammer. It is easy to use like a hammer, but its also easy to smash your thumb or break a window if you don't use it properly.

There are many options available for altering the fuel delivery on a Buell, including piggy back units like your truck. The best route to go is either with ECMspy or with a Erik Buell Racing Race ECM. Those directly control how the bike works, while piggyback units fool sensors, muck with injector outputs and so on. The piggybacks tend to be less reliable and more likely to cause drivabilty issues.

Hey Froggy
If a guy has stock exhaust, is the race ECM gonna change performance much? And if you upgrade exhaust you need a new ECM? Is the ECMspy adjustable to your set up and conditions?

I inquired about purchasing one, they don't have one listed for the '07 Uly, here's their response:

David,

We appreciate your interest. We have not sold a calibration for the 2004-2007 XB’s with a stock exhaust, because the stock DDFI2 calibration is quite good, and not nearly as intrusive as the later DDFI3 bikes which had to meet tighter emissions.

We have created a calibration, but the increases are marginal, and it’s not worth selling ECM’s to customers with no noticeable performance advantage. We do offer ECM’s for DDFI2 XB’s equipped with aftermarket slipon mufflers, like a Drummer, etc.

thanks David. I have an '07 and I guess I can go ahead and spend the $ I've been saving for that Erik Buell Racing ecm on other stuff now too.

Didn't realize that was the case until you posted that tidbit.

I almost went with the ebr ECM , but took the stock route because I want to tamper with it via emcspy. Can do some cool/fun things with the stock that you can't with the ebr ECM

I agree, I have been having fun doing some data logging and adjusting the fuel maps on the stock ECM with ECMspy (I saved the stock EEProm just in case I want to go back).

I just reprogrammed the ECM so the exhaust servo opens and closes at different RPM's instead of just at WOT. All you need is a little know-how (found by reading this forum), some free software and a cheap USB cable. How cool is that? I love my Uly, I keep I learning new things that impress me on the forethought and engineering put into its design.

Actually, the Race ECM has more programablity. The Race ECM is based off the stock one anyway. I plan on sending all three of my Race ECMs back in to have them unlocked so that I can do more tweaking.

Thinking about the replacement ecm process made me wonder this:

In this instance, will you have to do the tps reset with the bike cold? I ask this under the premise that the new ecm doesn't know the position of the existing tps and would need to 'orient' itself (for lack of a better way to 'splain it) to its new 'partner'.

Once the two begin to work in concert, would another tps reset be necessary once the engine was warmed up ?

Is that flawed logic?

Ideally for 99-07 bikes, you will want to warm the bike up, swap the ECMs, do the TPS reset before it cools off, and everything will be good. In theory you can do the TPS reset just fine when its cold, but it makes it a real pain to get the idle set right, especially if it is enrichening the mixture.

Are there specific drivers needed for either ECMspy or the cable to get it to recognize the bike? It's not "connecting". I only want to reset my TPS.

I installed the replacement ECM and it started right up and ran just fine. Warmed it up and did a TPS reset even though it did even seem to need it. Runs like a charm now.

ECMspy play-time is next..........
