Hi all,

After my weekend of traveling through Mt Rainier NP and up the east side of the cascade mountains, I came back across on SR 20 through North Cascades NP and then into Anacortes, WA, down to Coupeville and then over to Port Angeles.

That said, it was dry most of the way, but after a night in Port Angeles, the bike started acting strange. It would cough and sputter pretty bad between 2.5-3k. Cold, it died on me twice, but started up fine. It was also HUMID and raining sideways. Above 3k, ran fine, below 2.5k, ran fine.

After exiting the rain and heading home, it dried out and never had the issue again, no matter how hard I tried to replicate it.

WTF could be causing this issue when its RAINING? I have the EGR reroute in place, new plugs and new plug wires.

Did a TPS reset and 10 minute idle before I left on my trip to recalibrate the IAS. I'm at a loss of what could be the issue.

Mine has acted up at around 3000 rpm when it's cold. I attributed it to too much advance, but maybe the damp has something to do with it. (I can almost see PA across the Sound from here.)

Mine has never done it once warmed up, so I just don't run it there.

Could be something as simple as the plug wires getting wet and shorting out. When you're inspired sometime, carefully remove each plug wire and coat the inside of the boots with silicone grease and reinstall. This will help keep moisture from reaching the metal terminals. Wait until it rains again, go ride, and see if your problem is cured.

It sounds like a short somewhere between the coil and the plug, did you liberally apply dielectric grease?

The stock wires are junk. Replace them with some 8.5mm all Silicone Magnecore wires. They make a set specifically for the Buell. I had the same problem with the stockers. Never a repeat after installing the new wires. Before I replaced the wires, I was actually shocked on my wet knee when caught in a rain storm.

Use dielectric grease very sparingly. To much grease can cause the wires to pop off or not engage properly. I only place a very thin coating on the spark plug end boot. I do not use it on the coil end. The silicone boots seal very well.

I've had this problem with stock wires on my past three bikes (haven't ridden the buell in any significant rain yet). Was always down to crap stock wires. (fwiw Suzuki finally started making good wires around '03, before that theirs were crap, ducati wires are crap and well its to be expected that the wires on my '75H1 would be crap by now : ))

I'm going to preemptively order a set of those magnecore wires, sounds like just the ticket. : )

If I'm not mistaken the part number for the wires is 2557.

Magecores installed already (ie. New Plug wires as above), so either they are causing the issue or not the issue at all.

There is a "weak impulse" that occurs at 3000RPMs. I believe it occurs when the ECM is swapping open/closed loops.

I found that wet weather and high humidity (fog, mist, etc.) exacerbated the issue.

It would cause the motor to stumble right at 3000 RPMs. If yours is stalling, it may be something more.

Do you also have open airbox, K&N filter?

I had similar problems in the rain. Disappeared two years ago when I got rid of the 77 connector

Yep, K&N filter and drummer SS (original owner put them on). Similar, seems like around 3k is where it really had the issue, though it occurred anywhere from 2.5k to 3k.

Motor only stalled twice when cold (leaving a stop light both time) and never did it again. I think that's not the issue, it didn't stall after 10 miles, but still exhibited the stumbling in the RPM range noted in my prior post.

Agree with Chief: I had this exact issue until I removed and hardwired the 77 connector.

My understanding is that the 09 doesn't use the 77 connector from what I have read previously. If this is incorrect, I'd like to know.

You're correct- 2008 and up XBs did away with the 77 connector, so if you have a 2009, that's not your problem.

Still looking for any hints about what the issue could be outside of what has already been asked. Still not seeing the issue dry and would prefer to not have it happen again when it gets wet (which is on the way here).

I think it is going to be electrical - either something is shorting out or plug wires are arcing. I haven't looked at the plug arrangement on the Uly, but is there any way the plug wells are filling up with water? How are the connections between your magnacores and the coils?


FWIW I rode home last night on the uly in a tremendous rain storm. Hard enough rain that there were several inches of water on I395 and cages just stopped in the middle of the freeway to wait it out. The uly and I zig-zaged our way through and it didn't miss a beat. At times enough water came off the front wheel to spray above the headlight.
