Because my rear tire was exhibiting a strange wear pattern, I recently checked the air pressure in my Pirelli Scorpion Synchs. To my embarrassment both the front and rear tires were inflated to only 20psi. The tires are stamped with 42psi. I remedied the situation, and it feels like I got a completely new (better) motorcycle. Morale of the story: check your air pressure regularly, even if the tires "look" OK. 42 will be the max load pressure. That's more than is ideal for most conditions (I think Buell says to run 36psi). |

Solution: Get a tire pressure monitoring system, I can tell you how much air I have effortlessly even while on the highway. |

Man you had to *feel* 20psi in the tires!! Brought mine back from the dealer after purchase...following their full 6,267 point inspection, both tires were found to be 20psi or below. Awesome! |

http://www.doranmfg.com/motorcycle-tire-pressure-m onitoring-systems.htm It requires you change the valve stems (included), the ZTL caliper is too large and will hit the sensor if mounted externally, so you just use the new stems to mount it internally in the rim. |

Hey Froggy, your ignition key is in the wrong place. It's supposed to be hidden under the left front in a place that requires Helen Keller skills to even find, much less operate. |

The embarrassing thing is that I hadn't checked the tire air pressure since I purchased the bike used at the Harley Dealership a few months ago (I didn't know how the bike was supposed to handle, coast, etc.) (Message edited by djohnk on September 14, 2011) |

Wow. Have you at least set the suspension?? If you think AIR made a difference...wait till you set up the forks and shock! Tire pressure is "Pre-Ride-Check 101". Every ride, I check. Especially now with temp fluctuations night to day and back again...expand/contract always causes some variation. The more you ride, the more in-tune you will become. I'm at the point now where I can feel a 5psi drop on any of my bikes, just by the handling and steering. The owners manuals recommend 36/38 f/r. I tend to run 38/40 on all my bikes just for treadwear and handling. If I have a boatload of crap on the Uly with me, I'll push it to 42 in the back. |

That's a nice looking unit Froggy. FWIW on my previous bikes with 17" rubber (same sizes as the Uly) I've found a 2psi change noticeable and a 4psi change dramatic. |

It's funny I have set the suspension, replaced the rocker cover gaskets, and done a ton of maintenance related stuff. I just neglected to check the tire pressure because the they "looked" the they were normally inflated. (Message edited by djohnk on September 14, 2011) |

All that electronic stuff and the fact that it never gets washed are the reasons no one will steal froggy's bike. They are afraid of disease and not having a pilots license training. Did ya get the oil to stop spewing all over Froggy? Should have ridden an air head.....they don't have enough power to push that much oil out! |

Nope, it only spews if I am over 4000rpm, so its not an issue on my day to day riding, but it does make like difficult if I hit the superslab due to the short gearing. |

I can, and with only a glance. In the time it takes you to even think about checking yours, I am done and know my current pressure. No getting off the bike, no fumbling with stem caps, gauges, ultimately losing air each time you connect the nub, then wondering if your waste of space pen type gauge is actually correct. The best part? I can see changes as they happen and compensate for it. I've seen pressures change as much as 10PSI on a single day without me adding or removing any air. Another highlight is that it will warn you when you are losing air, which is very fantastic if you happen to pickup a nail, you can come to a safe stop before having a catastrophic failure or an accident. It sure isn't a waste of money, but not having one on your bike is just plain old stupid. There is no downside other than the initial cost, but it is an invaluable tool that will get used every day and make your life easier and more enjoyable. As a matter of fact, by law all cars (2006 and newer) are required to have it, hopefully there will be a push to mandate them on motorcycles too. It is literally your ass that is on the line, why take chances? I can't name many things that are this cheap that will significantly improve your odds of making it home. |

I'm running the PR3 tires, and 4 psi makes a dramatic difference. If its raining hard, drop the 4 psi and ya can literally ride the crap out of them with GREAT traction. I run mine at 42 rear, and 40 front at 75 degrees. Most of my rides are commuting to and from work. |

Wanna feel a real difference - go to the tire store and have the air replaced with nitrogen. If you really have a feel - you'll feel the difference on those bumps and holes that you've been plowing through. Tires last longer, too. |

Conchop - good advice. N2 also leaks less since it is a larger (not heavier) molecule. I can't believe that I never thought of that for the bike before. We do that with both cars. What did they charge you to simply fill with N2? Froggy - was the gas cap comment a joke? I know that you are uber mileage conscious, which is great, but unless you've done the CFD analysis to prove my assumption wrong I'm guessing air is not flowing smoothly over that area anyway. That being said, I like the look better as it appears more aerodynamic. Who knows, maybe it does have a 0.01 MPG affect. I'm sure that if anybody could track that level of difference it would be you ... I wonder what affect the upside down BUELL has.

I'll agree to disagree, Froggy. Yeah, the nanny state mandated them for cars, like many other nanny state mandates. Now folks have to buy expensive new sensors when tire changers hit them, which is not an infrequent occurrence. You nanny state kids may like it but I don't. |
