So big problems with my Uly 2008 34k km.


Lost all compression. bike is at the dealer now and they are running a compression test but they still do not know what is going on.

Oh dear. Both cylinders at the same time? How'd you determine no compression without doing a compression test? Guessing the bike rolls easily while in gear?

bike rolled some 100m while in gear.

also, dealer ran a compression test.

They want to charge me 5 hrs labour to open up the engine a see what is wrong.

They said that they can get HD to pay for the repairs if i pay to open up the engine.

That seems mighty strange. Lost compression in both cylinders simultaneously? Did you put a gauge to them to see how much they are bench pressing?

Don't know the compression results, they said "you are not getting any compression, we think it may be your cams, but we need to open her up to know what the problem is for sure".

I have a bike currently in the shop. I think it's a failed fuel pump. I also think I'm going to get billed hours and hours for them to figure that out. I hate that we have to pay for their education. I would perhaps feel differently if I owned a shop....

Why would H-D corporate pay for the repairs if you pay the shop to open it up?

I'm just asking. Seems like a strange thing to say. Also, 5 hours seems like an awful long time to get at an engine for a triage.

It is, it is only 5 hours if the tech is a drunk blind amputee that has a seizure every 10 minutes.

I've seen a motor mostly removed out of a Firebolt to get a head off, the entire procedure was about 15 or 20 minutes in a garage by a bunch of Buellers.

Unfortunately because you are in Canada, you are going to get the shaft. My understanding is that all the HD/Buell dealers in Canada are run by the same company, Deeley. Its not like you can load it on a truck and bring it to the next shop a few hours away and get better service.

I must say I just experienced two Canadian dealers and they were awesome folks. Now I was on my Harley but I had stripped half the teeth off my starter ring gear which is riveted to the clutch basket. The first dealer in Moncton New Brunswick tore it down and discovered the problem. Called all over trying to find parts. I asked them to call Newfoundland, since that was my destination, and the Newfie's had the part. They cleaned out the primary and put it back together. It was on the rack for four hours. They charged me for one hour and for a gasket and fluid. They said they felt bad about not being able to get the part. I then rode to Newfoundland and in St. John's they got me in first thing in the morning and had me out in four hours. Super folks to deal with and saved my vacation.

I forgot to mention, both dealers still had their Buell signs up and in Moncton one of the employees rode an 1125 RR.

Thats good to hear Tootal.

Yeah my dealer here in Montreal is the best Buell guys around with a record 1 Buell owner on payroll!!!

But the truth is that he is the ONLY guy who is still willing to touch them, the other HD dealers will do an oil change and stuff but other than that they will send you to Montreal unless the garage is empty and they need the work.

Ok so I got a call from my dealer.

Look like what broke was a key channel?? No idea what that is.

Anyhow is caused enough damage that HD needs to change my values, pistons, headers, and all the gear that revolves around these. Basically 3/4 of an engine

But!

HD is going to pay for it all!

All i have to pay is what the called a 150$ deductible and fluids so about 250$ in all.

AWESOME!

I have no idea what a key channel is, but I hope it never breaks on my bike! Can't believe the amount of damage.

Did you have an extended warranty on your bike? Don't know why else you would be paying a deductible and HD footing the rest of the bill. I am very happy for you that it is getting resolved though.

I would guess they're referring to the key in the crankshaft that holds the gear that drives the camshafts. Either the key failed or the keyway (key channel as they called it) failed, resulting in cams not turning while crankshaft continued to turn for a few revolutions, probably resulting in bent valves.

Bike is out of warranty for a bout a year now.

Saw the damages this week. The channel key is a little piece of metal that holds a shaft to a gear in the cams, or something like that. I suspect it is exactly what Hughlysses stated.

Anyhow it broke and cracked the spirally gear it is attached to which cause havoc in the engine.

Wrong. Deeley is the exclusive distributor of Harley/Buell in Canada. Retailers are owned independently, just like in the U.S.

That is going to be a butt load of tech hours and a whole let of praying the tech knows how to work on Buells. I would ask how much more for a new crate motor and if you can pay the difference.
