I hate to be a contributor to the bad press that's been flowing around here lately but my Uly died last night, and before it goes into the shop (warranty) I'd like to hear some thoughts from you all. 2009 with 27k miles It's been acting up a little for the past few days; about once a day it would start to sputter for a few seconds. Always after it was idling for a bit (like at a red light). As soon as the revs were above 2500 it would smooth out and run fine. Last night it did it again, and wouldn't smooth out. When the revs got higher it simply started to surge heavily. I limped it the 3 blocks to my fathers house. When I tried to let it idle, it coughed and sneezed and died. The ugly part, during this coughing sneezing process it was pumping light colored smoke out the muffler. After it stalled, it would not restart; simply cranking over without trying. I went back ten minutes later to try again, and it was firing a bit trying to start, but wasn't even close; when I let off the starter it kept running on one cylinder for about 3 seconds, but it was not consistent even for one cylinder, and it blew a bit more smoke. No CEL at all! Thoughts??? |

What flavor smoke - oil? Fuel? How old are the plugs and wires? Maintained / replaced according to the schedule, or "they're fine, I'll leave them in for a while and save $8"? Is your fuel pump running? What was your fuel level? Battery V? |

Damn thing is winded from that epic trip you made! It is protesting for a little time off. I would say pull the plugs for an inspection first. They can tell a story. Could have been a loose plug wire going long enough to cause a plug to fail and these things are never happy on one cylinder. Next up would be loose battery terminals, bad grounds, ECM failing. |

Maintained / replaced according to the schedule, or "they're fine, I'll leave them in for a while and save $8"? Wires are untouched (It's a 2009?!) Plugs were swapped for Iridiums, but are most likely nearing the end of their life. Iridiums usually go about 30k and these have 20k on them. Is your fuel pump running? Yes What was your fuel level? 3/4 full Battery V? New Battery, cranking fast. Voltage lights was green when running. |

I would hazard a guess that your rear cylinder temperature sensor may have given up the ghost. This doesn't always show up on the scanalyser and will do exactly what you describe by cutting the rear cylinder intermittently because it 'thinks' it is too hot, causing a misfire or non running |

Cracked ECM? See numerous threads on the subject. The bottom of the seat tends to press on the two wiring harness connectors eventually cracking some of the internal conductors in the ECM leading to weird symptoms or outright failure. |

ECM was fine and untouched last time I checked, but that's been a little while I suppose. Both that or the Rear Temp Sensor could cause the poor running, but the smoke has me thinking more internal/mechanical. |

My 08 started doing this weeks ago as well. I replaced the plugs on advice I got here and it still does it. My "smoke" smells like fuel. To make it even more fun to figure out it has become intermittent. ECM looks ok and has been relocated. I have 16k miles and don't think it needs new wires but maybe. Sounds like I have some ground checks to do. Is the procedure to check the temp sensor in the manual? I am traveling so I will need to check that out when I get home. |

Lets be clear on this. The CEL only shows open wire/device faults and seems to do so only after some time. Trust me I know and is in effect dam near useless as a guide to problems like this. You have a sensor resistance problem, earth/cable damage, which is giving bad info the the ECM. I had it on my 06 bike and am sure I have it on my new 2010 bike as well. |

All of the advice above is good but only for an air/fuel or timing issue. Yours is burning oil too. You may have more than one problem. Is it making any odd sounds other than the usual? I would do a compression test and a leak down test if the compression test showed reason to. I would be looking for the oil, not the fuel. |
